Week beginning 17th December 2018

Hello Year One,

It has been a magical week. The children loved performing 'Born In A Barn.'

The children have continued with their lessons in between all the Christmas activities and they wrote  Summer poems.

For maths this week the children have been re-ordering numbers.
They will be learning about money next week.
They will be creating a grotto for Santa and will use this to buy and sell entrance tickets.
We will be focusing on Summer for our science lesson and will be making Summer flowers for our display.

On Thursday the children had their Christmas dinner.

They spent the afternoon watching a movie.

We only have one week left this term and we still have lots to do!
Hoping you all have a restful and happy weekend.

Week beginning 10th December 2018

Hello Year One,

We have been busy rehearsing for the Christmas concert this week. The children are really enjoying performing and singing. They are excited for you to come and see them next week.

We have continued with the curriculum throughout the week. In maths we have been doubling and halving and working on subtraction from ten.

We wrote about Christmas elves and pixies in our English lesson and created Spring poems as we focus on this season in Science. The children are learning the seasons and the months of the year. They can discuss what happens outside in each season and are able to explain why the weather changes. They understand that weather change affects wildlife, trees and plants.

Next week we will be performing to the school on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday parents, carers and friends will be coming to watch the concert.

On Wednesday it is open evening for parents from 3 - 4.30pm. If you are coming to the afternoon performance you can come straight to the class room to look at your child's work and then take your child home.

On Thursday we will be having our Christmas dinner, followed by a movie in the hall.

Friday next week is Christmas jumper day and the children can wear festive clothes.

We will be working on money and ordering numbers in maths next week.

For English we will be writing about our experiences of Year One so far. We will write poems about Spring and continue to learn how to structure sentences.

I hope to see you on Sunday at The Christmas Fayre. Thank you for all your contributions to the class hamper. It will be a lucky win for someone!

Many thanks
YDavis

Week beginning 3rd December 2018

Hello Year One,

We have had a busy week as we have been rehearsing for the Christmas Concert and continuing with our lessons.

For English the children wrote some wonderful Winter poems, which will be on display in the class room next week.

We have been focusing on adding 3 numbers together to make ten in maths. The children began by using counters and ten squares and then record the results.

We had a fun geography lesson, as we turned the class room into a farm to role play how the seasons affect farming.

For science we looked at a video of what happens outside in Winter. The children were fascinated to find out how long some animals hibernate and how much slower their heart rate is during this time.

Next week we will be rehearsing for the Christmas Concert. We will be continuing with maths and English and we have one art lesson as the children will be creating Winter tree scenes.

We will be continuing with poetry for English and for maths the focus will be doubling and matching objects and dominoes to numbers.

The children enjoy reading to us as often as we are able to hear them, so could you all ensure that once you have read with your child at home and completed the reading record, that the book comes back to school the following day.

On Wednesday we will be having a full dress rehearsal, so if possible could the costumes be in school by then.

Some of the children are dressing up as animals for the Christmas Concert and we will paint their faces accordingly. If you do not wish your child to have his/her face painted (because of allergies) please let us know.

Each year we make a class Christmas hamper for a raffle prize at the fayre. Could you please send in an item to go into the hamper by Wednesday the 5th December. This can be anything such as chocolates, wine and biscuits.

Have a restful and happy weekend.
Ms Davis

Week beginning 26th November 2018

Hello Year One,

We have had a wonderful week! The children wrote beautiful Autumn poems and have clearly learned so much about this season.

We went for a walk around the school grounds, identifying and collecting leaves.

We brought the leaves back to the class room and mixed red and yellow paints to make a warm orange colour. We painted the leaves and printed them on to paper.

The leaf pictures and poems will be displayed in our classroom for you to see at the next open
     evening.

For maths we have been learning about position and measuring lengths.

We have also begun rehearsals for the Christmas Concert, which the children are enjoying.

  Next Week

Maths

We will be adding 1, 2 and 3 by counting on and subtracting 1, 2 and 3 by counting back. We will be adding three small numbers by spotting ten or doubles.

English

The children will be given a poem which has been cut up, which they will re-order according to the rhymes. We will focus on a bank of rhyming words about sea creatures. The children will create their own poems about sea creatures using rhyming words.

Science

Our focus will be Winter this week. We will be reading books , watching videos and discussing what happens to the trees and plants in Winter. We will think about the weather in Winter and what happens to animals.

Geography

What happens on a farm during the different seasons.

Art

The children will be making programmes for the Christmas Concert.

The rehearsals for the concert will increase as we approach performance day.

When you have your child's costume ready please send it into school in a named bag.

I must apologise with regard to our trip to the farm. I have been contacting many local farms and have discovered they are all closed to the public for the Winter months. I did not realise they would shut. It has been agreed that next year the farm topic will be carried out in the Spring so that a trip to a farm can be incorporated. I have explained this to the children.

Don't forget the maths evening at 7pm on Tuesday 27th November.

I hope you have a restful and happy weekend.

Ms Davis

Week beginning 19th November 23018

Hello Everyone,

We have had fun this week and the children have enjoyed coming to school without uniform and with teddies!

We have been working on our number bonds to 10 and 20 this week. We use counters and boards to see how the numbers make 10.
We read and re-told the story of 'The Little Red Hen.' The children were able to use captions to show how the animals talked.
They made a leaflet to explain how to look after different pets and we turned these into a class book, which is available for you to look at when you come in.
For Design and Technology we made sliders for 'The Gingerbread Man' story.

Next week we will be composing a list of different rhymes and poems. We will be completing the missing words in rhymes and creating lists of rhyming words that we can use in poems. We will focus on Autumn poems.
For maths next week the children will be learning direction. They will show full and half turns and learn the four compass points. We will also be measuring and learning the size of a cm. The children will begin to use standard and non standard units to measure.
We will be focusing on Autumn and the weather changes for our science lesson. The children will also be writing a poem about Autumn.
This week we looked at the festival Diwali. The children heard a story that is told at Diwali, about light overcoming darkness. They used puppets to re-tell the story and the whole class worked together on a role play version. Next week we will be learning about Hannukah, which is the Jewish festival of light.
For Design and Technology we will be making moving hand levers.

I wish you all a happy and restful weekend.

Ms Davis

Week beginning 12th November 2018

Hello All,

The children have enjoyed being back at school and we have had a busy week! They have been writing about the activities of 'Moonchild' a character from the book we have been reading.

We have been recognising groups of tens and how when we add ones to ten we make a teen number. They are beginning to understand place value. They carried out some excellent work in maths yesterday, when they found 2 or more missing numbers in number sequences.

We are learning about the four seasons for science. We are finding out about the weather changes as we move through the seasons.

We are exploring farms and farming and looking closely at arable, livestock and dairy farming. We have been singing our own version of 'Old MacDonald had a Farm' and have been turning into crops, animals and dairy products to help us remember the different types of farming.

We are beginning to learn the songs for our Christmas performance, so hopefully they will be singing them at home in the coming weeks.

Reading

It is great that the children have the opportunity to read at home on a regular basis. This helps them make progress at a faster pace.

Please can you write a comment and /or let us know when your child has completed a reading book at home with you. We  aim to change the reading books as often as possible, but if there is no indication that it has been read at home we are reluctant to do so.

Next Week

Maths

The children will be consolidating their number bonds to 5,6 and 10. They will be playing a variety of games. They will move on to finding pairs of numbers. They will use objects and number facts and reasoning to solve mathematical problems.

English

Next week we will start making lists to compare why we think dogs or cats make great pets. The children will be creating leaflets on how to look after pets. We will make a class book about the pets we have which will be on display in the classroom.

We also have a class book on 'Celebrating Differences' week and all the wonderful work that came out of understanding and valuing equity.

Science

We will be focusing on Autumn and (weather permitting) we will take the children outside to collect leaves, fruits and nuts etc. We will be thinking about the clothes we wear in Autumn. We will create Autumn pictures with our collections.

Geography

Next week the children will be learning how to use a map with symbols and a key. They will learn how to navigate around a farm. This will followed with compass work and playing a direction game in the classroom as they begin to understand the 4 main compass points.

D and T

We will begin by looking at sliders as  mechanisms. I will read the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' and the children will role play the story. We will begin the process of cutting the scene to make the sliders.

RE

We will be focusing on Diwali next week. The children will role play and use puppets to re-tell the story. The children will understand that this is the festival of light for the Hindu religion.

I hope to see you at the firework display on Saturday and wish you all a happy weekend.

Ms Davis

Week beginning Monday5th November

Hello Year One,

We have had a busy week and the children have been working hard. They have written postcards to Aunty Goose from Duck. They wrote lists of tools that farmer's use and have been beginning to write in sentences. They are learning 'Kung Fu' punctuation which I am sure they will demonstrate to you if you ask them.

For maths they have been estimating and counting. They are learning how it is easier to group into tens when counting a large number of items.

It was lovely to see you all at the consultations and for you to share in celebrating the progress the children are making.

For the week after the holidays:

Maths

The children will be learning that teen numbers and ten and some more. There will be a variety of practical activities to help them grasp this concept. They will make towers of ten with cubes in a colour and then add ones in another colour.
We will also be working on ordering numbers to 20 and 30 and finding numbers in between two given numbers with a difference of two.
They will also be given 3 numbers and be asked to order them from the smallest to the largest.

English

The week will start by listening to the story 'Plenty Of Love To Go Round' by Emma Chichester Clarke. From this the children will begin to predict events in the story.
We will be looking at labels and asking ourselves what makes a good label.
Towards the end of the week the children will be creating lists of items needed to look after a cat. They will be writing captions for the actions of cats and we will be progressing with sentence structure.

Science

Our topic this half term is seasonal weather change and how this affects us in our daily lives. We will be going outside and waiting for a cloud to cover the sun so that the children can explain what they think is happening and how it feels. We will begin by discussing the four seasons and as the weeks go on we will be exploring each season in detail.

Geography

Our Project will be 'On The Farm' and we will be exploring arable, dairy and livestock farms. We will be finding out the foods that the different farms produce.

Design and Technology

This half term we will be creating sliders and levers. For the first week we will read 'The Gingerbread Man' and role play the story. The children will begin to create the background for their slider picture.

PSHE

Our theme this half term is 'celebrating differences' and we will begin by noticing our similarities and differences.

R.E

We begin with Diwali as we start to learn about the different festivals of light that religions celebrate. We will read the story of 'Rama and Sita' and the children will role play the story.

I hope you all have a restful week and look forward to seeing you on 5th November.
Ms Davis

Friday, 19 October 2018

Week beginning 21st October 2018

Hello Year One,

This week has been full of surprises and fun! We began our 'celebrating differences' week by discussing how different we all are.
We read some super stories and made people that portrayed these differences.

As it is also 'Black History Month' we read the story of Rosa Parks and the children wrote their own dreams of changing unfair aspects to our world.

We designed African animals and created 'African style' jewellery.
We are in the process of collating all the work that was carried out this week in a class book, which will be available for you to look at next week.
We read 'Handa's Surprise' and wrote stories about naughty animals stealing our fruit and vegetables. We made a pictogram to record the most popular fruit in our class. Strawberries were clear winners.
We have been looking at animal skins and this week was an ideal opportunity to create some art work using animal prints.

Maths

Next week we will be revising all we have learned so far this term. We will begin estimating amounts of items and counting them to check how close we were. The children all have their maths targets now and many have been asked to ensure they write their numbers accurately. They are keen to do this, so if they have some spare time at the weekend they could practise.

English

We have been working with the story 'Farmer Duck' which the children adore. Next week we will be sending the duck on a holiday as he is so tired from all the work he has been doing for the lazy farmer. The children will be writing a postcard from the duck to his Aunty Goose. They will be creating a list of the tools one needs as a gardener and a farmer.

History

We will be taking a closer look at the toys from the 70's and the children will choose one toy they would like to draw and describe, explaining why they have chosen it.

RE

The children will learn about charity and how religions work towards helping those in difficulty or crisis. We will be thinking about homeless people and how local churches collect items that may be useful for them. The children will then think about a fun way they could raise money for a good cause.

Science

The five senses will be the topic for next week as we explore how humans and animals use them to survive. We will also look at how people manage without sight and hearing.

I look forward to meeting you at the parent consultations this week. Until then, have a happy weekend.

Ms Davis

Friday, 12 October 2018

Week beginning 15th October 2018

Hello Everyone,

The children have enjoyed learning about Lowry this week and could explain many features of his paintings. They used charcoal to re-create the smoky, grey affect that he portrayed. They used the tip of the charcoal to draw the little matchstick figures.

Maths

We have been playing lots of number games this week, focussing on re-ordering numbers to 21. The children are beginning to form numbers correctly and write the name of numbers to ten.
Next week we will be sorting and grouping, making Venn diagrams and producing pictograms following class research.

English

The children are beginning to write stories. This week I read the first half of 'Farmer Duck' and the children had to create the end of the story. They managed this well, with most of them throwing the lazy farmer into a swimming pool! Next week we will be re-creating our own version of 'Handa's Surprise' and describing our dreams about changing something to make life better.

Next week is 'Equity week.' As a school we will be celebrating difference. It is also the beginning of 'Black history month' so our activities will be linked to these events. We have lots of exciting plans which I am sure the children share with you.

I have returned all the parent consultations times to you. I do apologise if you did not get the time you asked for. The later part of the afternoon/evening was very popular. If your appointment is not at all convenient please come and see me and I am sure we can re-schedule for another time.

I hope you have a restful and happy weekend.
Many thanks
YDavis

Friday, 5 October 2018

week beginning 8th October 2018

Hello Everyone,

The children have had a very exciting week. We completed the caterpillars for our DT project. The children decided to use string to thread them together and they all took part.
We had great fun at our harvest festival party. We have been learning about symmetry in maths and some of the children chose to make symmetrical designs for their fruit salads.

Maths

We have been working with shape and symmetry this week, alongside daily number work and carrying out sorting activities. Next week we will focus on number 0 -20, one less and one more than 20, sorting numbers to 20 and counting to 100 in tens. We will be playing number games to find missing numbers and to re-order muddled number lines.

English

Our English focus will be taken from the book 'Farmer Duck.' The children will be coming up with ideas for story endings and will be looking at patterns in stories. They will be writing or drawing story maps of their own. The topic will be losing something. If you have any memories of your child losing a toy or something special it would be really helpful to remind them of that time.

Science

We learned the parts of the human body this week. Next week we will look at characteristics of animals and the reasons for them.

History

The children will be sorting toys into different categories next week. We also have a guest speaker coming to share experiences of toys from the past.

RE

We celebrated harvest this week so will follow this up by looking at how different religions have a variety of festivals and traditions to give thanks.

The children are still not drinking the milk. If you are paying for this it seems a waste. Check with your child as to whether he/she wants to continue to have school milk.

Thank you for all the harvest festival contributions. We collected a really great range of products for those less fortunate than ourselves.

I wish you all a restful weekend.

Ms Davis

Friday, 28 September 2018

Week beginning 1st October 2018

Hello All,

We have been planning a class harvest festival this week and the children have decided they would like to sing harvest songs, do harvest dances and make a fruit salad. We are also collecting tins or packets of food for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Our class festival will be on Wednesday afternoon, but the food can be brought in any day next week.

Maths

We have been finding one more and one less than numbers up to 20. We have been working on writing our numbers correctly and adding number pairs to ten. The children have been counting beats to a tambourine to speed up their counting skills.

Next week we will be working on shapes and symmetry. The main focus will be triangles, circles, squares and rectangles. A great home activity would be to ask your children to name all the square objects in their homes, or all the circular things they can find etc.

English

The children have been creating story maps this week and learning how to sequence stories using language such as 'first, next, finally.' Next week we will be reading a new book called 'Where's My Teddy?' and our lessons will come from this story. The children will create a 'wanted' poster for the teddy, learn how to sequence the events in the story, create their own story and recognise the use of question marks.

History

We continue to look at toys from the past and present. Next week we will be sorting toys into groups and focussing on our favourite toys. We will be able to name the characteristics of different toys and put them into different categories.

RE

On Wednesday we will celebrate harvest and have planned activities for that afternoon. The children are very excited to make their fruit salads.

Science

As part of our topic on animals (including humans) we will be labelling different parts of the body.

DT

We have cut and painted the body parts for our caterpillars. Next week we will be looking at different materials that will help our caterpillars move in a wriggly way.

General Information

  • Please ensure that your children have full PE kits in school at all times. This includes trainers and warm clothing for outdoor games.
  • Many of you are paying for milk, but not all the children who have the option of a carton at playtime take the opportunity to drink it. Please have a chat with your children and ask if they still want milk.
  • Please remember to work on 'maths seeds' on a regular basis. It supports the mathematical understanding around the concepts we cover in lessons.
  • Please bring a tin or packet of food for our collection for harvest.
I hope you all have a fun and relaxing weekend.
Ms Davis

Monday, 24 September 2018

Week beginning 24th September 2018

Hello parents and carers,

I did send out a blog on Friday, but for some reason it is no longer on our page so I am updating you today.
The children are really enjoying Year One and are having fun while learning. They are extremely good at tidying up, especially when I put one of their favourite songs on. As soon as they hear 'Happy' they go into clearing up mode and by the time the song has finished the classroom is back to it's original state.

Maths

The children are learning their number bonds to ten and above. They are recognising numbers on dice and dominoes without having to count them. This week we will be learning 'one more' and 'two more.'
We are learning how to count to one hundred. Towards the end of the week we will move on to 'one less.'

English

As you know, the children are becoming accustomed to writing lists, labels and captions. It was pleasing to see how much progress they have made when they created a list of things to do in a park. As we read different stories this week we will be looking at the emotions that the characters portray. The children will be creating a list from happy to sad, to learn as many different words for the feelings in between the extremes.
Towards the end of the week we will be learning about sequences in stories and the children will be identifying the beginning, what happens next and the end of tales.

D and T

This week we will be creating hungry caterpillars. The children will enhance their design skills by thinking about how to create caterpillars that move.
It will be fun to re-create the story with one of the caterpillars and the different foods!

History

We will be looking at toys from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's this week. The children will be learning how many years there are in a decade. They will recognise toys from different eras and complete the activity by sorting pictures of toys into the decades chosen.

RE

As it is harvest time I will show the children images of harvest celebrations in different cultures and religions. We will focus on Christianity and how we celebrate harvest time.

Science

The children will make lists of different animals in a range of categories, such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

I hope the children enjoy this week. Don't forget Book Club on Thursday and Friday this week!

MsDavis

Week beginning 17th September 2018

Hello Parents/carers,

We have had a lovely week, as the children are becoming accustomed to the new routines and activities. They are extremely good at tidying up. We put a song on and by the time the song has finished they have completely cleared away!

We have learned our number bonds to ten this week and how to find one more!

In English we have created labels for our toy museum, made captions for animals and written a class story that uses repetition.

We have been learning about animals and that some live in water, some on land and some both. The children successfully completed a Venn diagram to show this information.

Next week we will be learning how to count to 100. We will find one more and one less that an number to 18. We will be counting on and back.

We start a new book on Monday. This week's book is 'Voices in the Park' by Anthony Browne. The theme will be to focus on what we do in parks. The children will be making lists, identifying and naming feelings, creating a class story map, using captions and sequencing sentences.

We will be looking at the toys that were popular in different decades, as the children learn and understand how long a decade is. We will be focussing on the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

For our science lesson we will be becoming familiar with finding names for different fish, amphibians, reptiles birds and mammals. This will develop into a sorting activity.

For RE the children will be thinking about harvest time and how different religions have different ways of celebrating harvest. I will be asking the children how they would like to celebrate harvest in our classroom and we will make plans!

In the PSHE lesson we will be focussing on rules and responsibilities. This will be followed by a mindfulness session as the children learn different techniques to find a calm place.

I hope you all have a restful weekend.
YDavis

Friday, 14 September 2018

Week beginning 10th September 2018

Hello Year One,

We have had a wonderful week, with many different activities.

The children have been learning how to match objects to the correct numbers and recognise the numbers on dice and dominoes without counting. They have begun to estimate numbers and count forwards and backwards to twenty.

As a class they are calculating how many children are in school each day. They are working out the day of the week and the date each day.

It is great that so many of you are hearing your children read on a regular basis as it has a huge impact on their progress. Please can you remind the children to place their reading book and record card in the red box if they need new books. The red box is on the table in the cloakroom. Please can you send in the children's maths record books every Monday as we need to check them all. The blue maths records go in the blue box.

The children's independence is developing and they are able to make their own way to the classroom in the mornings.

The children should have a PE kit in school every day in a PE bag. They need shorts, a t-shirt and plimsoles. They also need a track suit or warm clothes with trainers as for the next few weeks they will be having outdoor sessions.

English

In our English lessons we have been learning how to make lists and captions. This will be continued next week. We will also be looking at patterns within text and identifying what labels are used for. We will be making a class book about pets, so if you have any photos of your own animals the children can bring them in.

Maths

In maths we will be learning how to count on and count back. We will be learning one more and one less.

History

We will continue to learn about toys (new and old).

Art and DT

We used paints, glitter and different papers to create firework art this week. They were able to follow instructions well and created vibrant, colourful pictures. I was very pleased at how well the children cleaned up afterwards.
The children will be creating self-portraits in our art lesson and will use the egg boxes to make hungry caterpillars next week.

Religious Education

We will be learning about what religion is, what beliefs are and what practices people carry out when they are part of a religious group. If anyone from home would like to come in and share their beliefs and practices it would be great. Please let me know if you are available and would like to do this.

Science

We will be looking at a variety of animals and grouping them in various ways. We will be looking at similarities, differences and features of animals that are the same.

Mrs Robinson has been to visit us several times this week and has noticed how happy and settled the children feel.

I wish you all a happy and restful weekend and am looking forward to seeing the children next week.

Ms Davis and Mrs Wells

Friday, 7 September 2018

Week beginning 5th September 2018

Hello Year One,
What a fantastic beginning we have had this week. The children have all settled really well and seem happy and full of fun in school.

We have been exploring the new classroom, which has a hospital, reading corner, maths station, creative space and construction area.

The children love the magic box that comes out on a Friday and I'm sure if you ask them they will tell you all about it.

The children have done exceptionally well at coming to the classroom independently in the mornings and have adapted well to all the new routines etc.

Next week each child will be given a reading book. Please hear your children read as often as possible as it makes a huge difference to the rate of progress they make. Please write a comment in the reading journal to let us know that you have heard your child read and where they are up to. When the book has been read it will be changed the same day. Mrs Wells and I will hear each child read every week. When the books have been read the children will place them in the red tray in the classroom ready for Mrs Wells to change them.

We are beginning a topic on toys next week and it would be great if your child could bring one toy in to school. We will be looking at old and new toys, therefore if any parents/carers/grandparents etc could send in a toy from a different era that would be fantastic. If anyone would like to bring in a toy  and talk to the children about it that would be amazing! Please let me know if you or someone you know would like the opportunity to do this.

As you are aware we are in the process of redecorating the school and for the next few weeks the hall will not be available, therefore the children will need tracksuit and trainers as they will be outside for all PE lessons. The weather could turn colder soon so it is far better to be prepared. Plimsoles are not appropriate for outside PE as they will get wet.

In Year One we will not be using 'show and tell' as part of our work as the children will be required to bring things from home associated to the topic, for example, this term we will be asking for toys.

We will be reading 'The Hungry Caterpillar next week and it would be great if you could send in empty egg boxes so that the children can make caterpillars on strings.

Please could all children have their hair tied back for health and safety reasons.

We will be beginning to work from our timetable next week. If anyone would like a copy or to come and see how we plan the days please feel free to ask me.

The children were very tired today. I think they were exhausted from all the new things they have learned and because they have had a long holiday. I wish you all plenty of rest and a happy weekend and am looking forward to a busy week next week

Many thanks
Ms Davis
