Week ending 27th January 2023

 Hello Everyone,

The children have enjoyed all the fun activities this week. They love going to the woods and it was a particularly special trip this time as they collected the natural objects they wanted to use to create their own sculptures.

We have been studying the work of Andy Goldsworthy and the children were fascinated by the sculptures he creates in natural environments. They were excited when I explained that they would be creating their own natural sculptures. They drew designs of their sculptures and then found the natural objects they needed and created their own sculptures.

We have explored 2D and 3D shapes in our maths lessons.

The children completed their stories. They managed to include a beginning, a middle and an ending and we even got some adjectives being used!

We have been looking at Baptism in our RE lessons and in a couple of weeks we will go to the local church for a demonstration.

The children investigated different types of homes this week and they had to name the features of homes.

For PHSE we have been talking about how we feel when we find something difficult or challenging. We thought about strategies for coping during these situations.

Next Week

English

We will begin a new book next week. It is called 'How To Was A Woolly Mammal,' by Michelle Robinson and Kate Hindley.
This is a humorous book and teaches the children about instructions. They will be writing sets of instructions for different situations.

Maths

Next week we focus on measurements of length, mass and speed. There will be several investigations and the children will need to learn the vocabulary around this.

History

We will begin to look at houses and homes from past times and the children will be learning the names for the different periods of time. They will be allocating pictures of homes to the correct time periods.

RE

We will continue to look at Baptism.

Science

As we have been exploring materials we will carry out an experiment next week to find the most suitable material to make an umbrella. The children will be predicting results and using a table to record their findings.

Week ending 20th January 2023

 Hello Everyone,

I do apologise for my blog being late. The internet was down on Friday afternoon, so I am posting it now.

The children had a busy and successful week. They learned to double and half numbers, planned a story and sorted materials into groups.

We did design the homes for the project. I will photocopy them this week and send them home so the children are able to use their planning to create their structures.

We have been looking at the work of Andy Goldsworthy (natural sculptor) in preparation for this week's work. On Wednesday morning (weather permitting) we will be going for a walk in the woods. I have lots of volunteers for this trip, but please let me know if you would like to join us. The children will need suitable clothing and footwear. They will also need a plastic bag as they will be collecting their natural objects to create the sculptures when they return to school.

The children did well with their spellings last week. They are so thrilled when they have good results, so working on them at home is successful.

This week

English

The children have been planning for story writing, concentrating on a beginning, a middle and an ending to their stories. This week they will be writing the stories using their planning. They will also be sorting sentences in an order that makes sense.

Maths

We will be exploring odd and even numbers this week. We will also be looking at 2D and 3D shapes.

Science

As we will be walking through the woods we will be noticing how the Winter weather has changed what we see and what is happening to our outside environment.

History

We will continue to work on our exploration of homes from the past. This week we will be looking at the features of homes.

RE

In a couple of weeks time I will be taking the children to the church to see how Baptism is performed. I will be teaching them the reasons people get Baptised and they will have a good understanding of this before the trip.

D and T

On Wednesday we will be collecting natural objects for our sculptures. On our return to school we will design our sculptures and create them in the outside area.

I hope you all have a fabulous week.

Week ending 13th January 2023

 Hello Year One,

Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you for the gifts and the beautiful hamper! What a wonderful Christmas treat and my family approved! Lots of lovely goodies for me to share at Christmas - thank you.

It was great to see you all after the Christmas break. The children have been telling us about their Christmas experiences.

This week we have begun a couple of new projects.

English

Our class reading book is 'The Last Noo-Noo' by Jill Murphy. The children are loving this story and have already begun to re-tell it themselves. they have used speech bubbles and written questions to the characters in the story.

Next week they will be planning their own stories with the same theme. They will create a list of adjectives, plan a clear beginning, middle and ending and by the end of the week they will write their stories about planting something magical in the garden.

Maths

This week we have been focusing on place value (Tens and Ones)

The children will go on to doubling and halving next week.

Design and Technology

You will now be aware that this term's home project is to design, build and evaluate a home. A letter was sent home today explaining this. If you need further information please pop in and see me.

Next week the children will design their homes. They will need to decide what materials they will need and how they will make them. This will be carried out at school and a copy will be sent home for your child to use when gathering materials and constructing the homes.

The completed projects need to be in school by the end of the Spring term.

History

Our history project ties in with D and T well, as we will be looking at homes from the past. We have a main focus on Victorian housing and interior design.

RE

Our focus will be the community we live in, the groups we belong to, the people who help us and why we enjoy being a part of Potters Bar.

We will also be exploring Baptism and on 23rd February we will be visiting Christ Church who will demonstrate a Baptism and discuss the meaning with the children.

Science

We will be investigating materials. We will sort materials according to their properties, group materials and discuss why they are used for different purposes. We will experiment with materials and water.

We were exploring shoes this week and I was explaining why shoes are made from flexible material. I asked the children whether it would be easy to walk in wooden shoes and they laughed! I remembered I have a pair of clogs in the cupboard which I put on and the children were fascinated. They each had a turn trying to walk in clogs. Here are some pictures!

ART

We look at the wonderful sculptures from Andy Goldsworthy this term. In a week or so we will go for another woodland walk and the children will collect the natural objects they need to create their sculptures. On return to school they will work outside building their own natural sculptures.

Spellings

Please ensure that your child uses the 'look, cover, spell and check' method at home at least three times a week. They love it when they have a successful spelling test on Fridays. I have explained that they are quite capable of doing this at home independently, but I am hoping you will remind them.

The spellings are also learned at school at least twice a week.
The coming week's spellings have been distributed and taken home, but if you cannot find them they are here below.

I wish you all a very happy weekend.
