Week beginning 12th November 2018

Hello All,

The children have enjoyed being back at school and we have had a busy week! They have been writing about the activities of 'Moonchild' a character from the book we have been reading.

We have been recognising groups of tens and how when we add ones to ten we make a teen number. They are beginning to understand place value. They carried out some excellent work in maths yesterday, when they found 2 or more missing numbers in number sequences.

We are learning about the four seasons for science. We are finding out about the weather changes as we move through the seasons.

We are exploring farms and farming and looking closely at arable, livestock and dairy farming. We have been singing our own version of 'Old MacDonald had a Farm' and have been turning into crops, animals and dairy products to help us remember the different types of farming.

We are beginning to learn the songs for our Christmas performance, so hopefully they will be singing them at home in the coming weeks.

Reading

It is great that the children have the opportunity to read at home on a regular basis. This helps them make progress at a faster pace.

Please can you write a comment and /or let us know when your child has completed a reading book at home with you. We  aim to change the reading books as often as possible, but if there is no indication that it has been read at home we are reluctant to do so.

Next Week

Maths

The children will be consolidating their number bonds to 5,6 and 10. They will be playing a variety of games. They will move on to finding pairs of numbers. They will use objects and number facts and reasoning to solve mathematical problems.

English

Next week we will start making lists to compare why we think dogs or cats make great pets. The children will be creating leaflets on how to look after pets. We will make a class book about the pets we have which will be on display in the classroom.

We also have a class book on 'Celebrating Differences' week and all the wonderful work that came out of understanding and valuing equity.

Science

We will be focusing on Autumn and (weather permitting) we will take the children outside to collect leaves, fruits and nuts etc. We will be thinking about the clothes we wear in Autumn. We will create Autumn pictures with our collections.

Geography

Next week the children will be learning how to use a map with symbols and a key. They will learn how to navigate around a farm. This will followed with compass work and playing a direction game in the classroom as they begin to understand the 4 main compass points.

D and T

We will begin by looking at sliders as  mechanisms. I will read the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' and the children will role play the story. We will begin the process of cutting the scene to make the sliders.

RE

We will be focusing on Diwali next week. The children will role play and use puppets to re-tell the story. The children will understand that this is the festival of light for the Hindu religion.

I hope to see you at the firework display on Saturday and wish you all a happy weekend.
