Week beginning 29th April 2019

Hello Year One,

Welcome back to school life. We all seemed to have a lovely rest.

I will begin by introducing the topics and plans for the coming half term.

English

We will be learning about traditional tales. The children will be reading the stories, sequencing events, carrying out comprehension activities and writing their own stories. They will be interviewing characters from the stories so that they are able to discover how they feel and why they acted the way they did. We will use role play and mime to tell stories and re-write story endings.

Maths

This week we have been sharing in equal and unequal groups. Next week we will begin multiplication. The children will learn the language of multiplication, that it is repeated addition and will calculate answers using concrete objects.
This will be followed by problem solving by using multiplication. We will be exploring scaling and patterns. Towards the end of this half-term the children will begin learning how to tell the time.

Science

Our science topic is plants, which means we can carry out lots of field work outside. The children will be planting beans and keeping diaries of their growth and development. We will be identifying wild and cultivated plants and flowers. The field trips will help us to identify trees. The children will learn to label the parts of a plant and tree. They will learn about the conditions plants need to enable them to thrive and grow.

History

Our history project is Famous Queens. The children will understand what a monarch is and where they live. They will explore Tudor life and Queen Elizabeth 1. We will find out more about Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 11. The children will be exploring the three different time periods.

Art and Design

The children will be printing this half-term, using their hands, fruit and vegetables. They will be designing and making a salad with seasonal vegetables.

RE

We began this week by exploring The Holy Bible, as we are looking at sacred texts. Next week we will move on to The Qur'an and The Torah the week after that. The children will then be listening to and using story boards to recount faith stories.

ICT

The children will use the internet to discover information about the famous queens we will be studying. They will create an information sheet on how to plant a bean. They will take photographs of the stages of their bean growth.

PSHE

The topic is 'relationships' and the children will be discussing how to  make friends and stay friends. We will learning how to resolving conflicts that occur and how we can help others who find it more difficult to make friends.

I have given many children the lines they need to learn for our assembly which has now changed to Friday 10th May at 9am. We will be rehearsing in school over the next two weeks. The children are very excited. I will send notes home with the children  regarding costumes (this will not involve any expense, it will just be clothes from home).

I am looking for volunteers for the two field study trips I have planned for this half-term. I need 6 adults for each trip. The outing will involve identifying plants, flowers and trees.

Please can all library books be returned next week as there are a few outstanding. the children cannot take a new book out until they have returned the previous one.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter holidays Year One. We've had a great term. This week has been fun, watching the KS2 production and visiting the church. The children learned so much from the visit.

I will be writing a detailed blog during the school holidays.

I wish you all a safe and happy Easter and look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks.
