Week ending 26th May 2023

 Hello Everyone,

We have completed all our projects this week and are ready for a new half-term.

We ended the day with a story outside, which was lovely.

The children have probably told you about the 'Year One Bear,' but I will explain the process.
As an end of year topic the children take turns to look after 'Year One Bear' or 'Bobby' as he is sometimes known.
They can take the bear home and invite him to join in with any activities or trips. The bear is quite happy to experience anything. Your child can take photos of bear throughout the time he is with you and write about the adventures that have been shared. The photos and any written explanations come into school and we make a class book about the experiences. The book stays with the class and in years to come they can look back on the adventures they shared.
We waved Bobby off  today for his first sleep over! We are looking forward to seeing what he has to share with us on his return to school after the holiday.

Summer Two

English

We will be continuing to explore suffixes as the children become familiar with the term and recognising 'ed, '  'ing'  'er' and 'est.'

We will be learning how to write an explanation text on how to bake a cake.

Maths

The children will be learning division and multiplication by sharing, grouping and solving problems.

Science

We will be exploring the parts of trees. The children will learn the names for the different parts and write sentences to describe them.

Geography

We have a geography project that the children are very excited about beginning. We will begin by learning where the different continents are and then we focus on one each week. The first is Europe and in particular France.
If the children have anything they would like to bring from home to support this project it would be very helpful. If anyone from your family have any personal experience of a country that we visit it would be so helpful if you could come in and share your knowledge and understanding with the children. Just have a chat with me and we can arrange a convenient date and time.

RE

For the next few weeks we will be looking at faith stories and our understanding of God. The children will be given the opportunity to reflect on their own thoughts about different beliefs.

PHSE

The children will be learning about how we change as humans. We will look at photos of the different stages of life from a baby to an older adult. They will be identifying the body parts of boys and girls and how they are different. They will use the correct vocabulary to name the body parts.

ART

We will be learning about the primary and secondary colours. The children will mix the primary paint colours to make the secondary colours.

I wish you all a happy and restful week.

Ms Davis

Friday 19 May 2023

Week ending 19th May 2023

 Hello Year One,

I am sure you all enjoyed the amazing performance by Year One this morning. They did so well and were so excited and happy with how it went. They love to perform to an audience!

On Monday it will be sharing assembly. If you have been informed that your child will be taking part it begins at 9am in the hall.

This week we have been learning about 'twice as many' in maths.

We have been taking photos of our beans and measuring them. Some beans grew really tall. One was 84cm, but some didn't grow at all. We kept a bean diary to monitor their growth and next week we will be writing about that.

A huge congratulations to all the children who learned their spellings for today's spelling test. So many more had spent time doing so and were thrilled when they got them all correct.

In Our English lessons we have been writing lists as we prepare for story writing next week. We will also been recognising and using the suffixes er and est.

We will be printing with fruit and vegetables next week. The children will choose two colours and create repeating patterns by printing.

The children have been learning about the moral of a story. They will be exploring the Bible story 'Jonah and the Whale' next week and look at the lesson that can be learned from this.

I wish you all a happy and restful weekend.

Ms Davis

Friday 12 May 2023

Week ending 12th May 2023

 Hello Year One,

This week we have been learning to make and recognise equal and unequal groups in our maths lessons. We wrote about our trip to Willows Farm. The children were really keen to carry out this task and I asked them to focus on sentence structure, which they did. It was great to read about their experiences as they all had such a great time.

The children used their designs to make delicious salads, which I hope you enjoyed.
For history we explored the life of Queen Victoria. The children are always interested in past school life and they loved watching a clip of a Victorian classroom!

Extra Phonics Sessions

As you are aware the  phonics screening is in June, so we have organised some booster sessions for some of the children. These sessions are so valuable as they work in small groups and concentrate on a different sound each day. The children who are attending have explained that they are really enjoying them. If you received a letter inviting your child to the sessions please arrive at 8.25am. It really is worth the early start.

Next Week

Maths

The children will be learning how to find maths in pictures. They will use multiplication to assess how many items are in each picture. They will move on to scaling, finding 'twice as many.'

English

As the children become more familiar with the current story ' Anancy and Mr Drybone' we will discuss the morals of this traditional tale. The children will be creating a list of items they might seek out when going on a journey.

ICT

The children will be taking photos of their plants next week.

Science

The beans are growing, so we will be measuring and comparing them for our bean diaries.

RE

As we explore the Christian story 'Jonah and the Whale' the children will be thinking about the moral of the story and why it is a faith story.

We will also be spending time rehearsing for our assembly, which is on Friday 19th May at 9am.

There will also be a sharing assembly on Monday 22nd May at 9am. If your child has been invited to attend he/she will have been given a slip of paper with a sentence or two to learn in preparation for the assembly.

As you know the children do love music from around the world, so I have sent a couple of photos of them learning a cowboy dance.

I wish you a happy weekend. It is supposed to be sunny and warm!

 Hello everyone,

It has been a busy week with lots of exciting activities being carried out. Year One have enjoyed their PE lessons learning The Morris Dance for the celebration.

This week we have continued to work on measuring, as we explored mass. The children have also learned to measure length in centimetres.

The beanstalk stories have been completed and it was great to see so many different ideas.

This week the children learned about the different vegetables that can be used in salad. They designed their own salad and have given me a shopping list so that I can get the ingredients for salad making next week.

Our history lesson focus was on The Tudor Period and Queen Elizabeth 1. They were very interested in finding out how tough life was then.

Please ensure your child attends on time. These sessions will continue until mid-June after the phonics screening for Year One.

Class Assembly

The children are so excited to share their work with you on Friday 19th May. If your child has a speaking part please practise with them as it will boost their confidence.
