Week ending 30th June 2023

 Hello Year One,

This week we continued to work on fractions. We looked at fractions of shapes. The children could identify halves and quarters of shapes.

We have begun a project on poetry for our English lessons. The children love 'The Owl and the Pussy Cat' and are learning to recite it.

We are looking at rhyming words and how poetry can rhyme.

We continued to explore the primary colours this week and created a colour wheel, exploring how to create secondary colours.

The children have been listening to creation stories this week. They recognise that different religions, cultures and countries believe in different creation theories and stories.

Year One loved taking part in 'The Apprentice!' They enjoyed the build up to the main event. They listened to the pitches and watched the adverts. They had great fun at the main event.

Week ending 16th June 2023

 Hello Year One,

This week we have been learning how to tell the time. The children have been taught o'clock, half past and earlier and later. They can do this at home, especially earlier and later as they found this more challenging.

We are working on sentence structure in our English lessons. The children enjoyed the new story and were able to write a character description of 'The Highway Rat!'

We went to China in our geography lesson this week. We explored some of the features and characteristics of China. The children were able to locate Asia on a world map and can recognise the Chinese flag.

For PHSE we learned about different life stages for living things. Next week we will be looking at  body parts and discussing the difference between boys and girls.

The phonics screening has been completed now. Thanks you for all your help and support getting the children prepared for the screening. All the extra effort was worth it!

Every week there is an increase in the number of children getting all their spellings correct. It does make a huge difference when they work on 'look, cover, spell and check' at home.

The children created beautiful art this week. We looked at the work of Claude Monet and in particular his 'Water Lilly' painting. The children loved using pastel crayons to recreate this scene. They learned how to smudge the colours together, remove lines and borders to model the impressionism style.

NEXT WEEK

English

The children will be continuing their work on sentence structure. They will be writing a book review and creating their own endings for our class story.

Maths

We begin a topic on fractions next week as we start exploring halves and quarters.

Next week we will travel to Australia. We will explore the features and characteristics of Australia and locate it on a world map.

The children will be learning the human body parts and recognising that there are differences between males and females.

RE

The children will be completing their moral explanations next week as we continue to focus on the story 'The Good Samaritan.'

Sports Day

Just a reminder that Thursday morning will be KS1 sports events. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

I hope you have a restful weekend.

Friday 9 June 2023

Week ending 9th June 2023

 Hello Everyone,

We have had a busy and exciting week!

We have been learning division in our maths lessons and we have been finding links between division and multiplication.

For English we have been preparing to write an explanation text. We read a text explaining how to make ice-cream and have been planning a text explaining how to bake a cake. We will finish this next week and also begin a new book. The new story is called 'The Highway Rat' by Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler.

For our science lesson we studied the parts of a tree. We went and explored the oak tree in the school grounds and we were able to locate all the parts.

The children were able to record their learning when they returned to the classroom.

Year One are very keen on geography and are enjoying our new topic 'Around The World.' This week they located the continents on a world map. They were able to find The UK and France on a map of Europe. They had great fun exploring the features and culture of France.

The children have waited a long time for the weather to be warm enough for outdoor water play, so were thrilled when we were able to set that up for this afternoon!

NEXT WEEK

Maths

We will be learning about direction and time next week. The children will learn clockwise and anti-clockwise. They will be spending a lot of time exploring clocks and how the hands move. They will learn o'clock and half past the hour. Finally they will explore earlier and later in time.

English

The explanation text will be completed. They should all be able to give you cake making instructions following this!
A lesson will be spent on sentence structure as they write about an event of their choice.
As the week progresses we will begin our new story 'The Highway Rat.' Much of our English work will come from this story. The first piece will be a character description.

Art

The children will be learning about the primary and secondary colours this week. They will explore colour mixing with the primary colours to create the secondary colours.

PHSE

This half-term we will be working on 'changing me.' This is a great topic to end with as the children prepare for the change of class in September.
Our first lesson will be on the changes that occur in living things.

Geography

Next week we will be looking at Asia and will focus on China. The children will locate China on a map of Asia. They will explore the features and culture of China.

RE

The children will hear the story of 'The Good Samaritan.' We will discuss the moral of the story and share experiences of helping others.

I wish you all a happy and restful weekend.
