Hello everyone,
This week we have focused on Anthony Brown's book 'Silly Billy'. It is a story about a little boy called Bill who worries about everything. Billy is so anxious that he can't sleep. But Grandma has just the thing for a boy like Billy- worry dolls, made to do his worrying for him. That night when Billy put the dolls under his pillow, he slept like a log. Year 1 created their very own worry dolls and have shared their own feelings with others.

Phonics
This week we have focused on writing captions and making up our own sentences.
After half term we will start Phase 4 phonics and we will use our writing skills to describe pictures.

Maths
This week we have been learning addition using a number line and a dice. It would be great if the children could play some board games with a dice during the half term.
After the break we will use Numicon for addition.

The children made sure that our cress is watered each day and that it has enough sun light. It has grown beautifully and the children loved making and eating their own cress sandwiches.

To celebrate the Black History month, this week we have been learning an African call and response rhyme: Toom-bah-ee-lero which was much enjoyed by all.

Every Friday Year 1 have an assembly with Mrs Custis. This week she spoke to the children about the importance of not judging a book by its cover. She used an example of a spotty banana, which might not look very appealing to eat , but in fact it is very sweet and tasty.
Have a restful half term!

 Hello all,

It was lovely to speak to you yesterday about your child's progress and settling into Year 1 during our parent-teacher consultations. I was pleased to hear that the children are happy at school and are keen to engage in learning at home. We greatly appreciate your support!

Today I have put in the children's book bags the lists of words with the letter sounds we have been learning at school. The children who did not have their book bags at school today will get the list on Monday. Please use the list  every so often for reading and writing practise. You can also use the words for making sentences.

Spellings

I am aware that some children found the last week's spellings challenging. From now on I will post five phase 2 words and 5 phase 3 words. I want all the children to practise the first five words and if you feel your child is able to learn Phase 3 words please practise them too.

Phase 2

tap, sit, tin, man, sad

Phase 3 words

moth, bath, long, sing, was

We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Maths

In maths the children were introduced to the number rods. They have been learning about the properties of the rods by creating their own designs. We will continue using the number rods for number bonds next week.

In PE the children continued mastering their Basketball skills.
In Science we have been learning about parts of plants. The children have made pictures of plants and have labelled each part.
Next week our learning will focus on our emotions. We will read  'Silly Billy' story by Anthony Browne and will make our own worry dolls .
Have a lovely weekend!

Hello everyone,

This week in Year 1 was all about planting and celebrating the Harvest. We have been given lots of  wonderful Harvest resources from Christ Church to enrich our learning. We have read the parable of The Sower and have been learning about all the things that a seed needs in order to grow strong and healthy. The children enjoyed identifying different fruit and vegetables such as spring onion, leek, cabbage and turnip. We have planted cress seeds in our classroom and we can already see the little shoots appearing. The children are planning to have cress sandwiches for their snack when the cress is ready to eat.
As we have had some lovely sunshine this week we went outside to collect autumn leaves.
We brought the leaves to the classroom and the children have sorted them out by colour and have made colourful leaf rubbings.
We have also planted some spring flower bulbs outside the classroom and we hope to have a beautiful garden in the Spring time.
Next week we will learn about the parts of plants.

Phonics
This week we have finished revisiting phase 3 letter sounds. For the next two weeks we will focus on using our phonics knowledge in reading and writing. We will also continue to learn phase 3 tricky words.
Please remember to use Reading Eggs at home. If you have lost your login details please contact me.
The children have enjoyed Phonics Play games in class: Dragon's Den and Buried Treasure. Simply google Phonic's Play and there are some free games your child can access. Depending on your child's reading level they can play Phase 2 or Phase 3 games.

Spellings for next week
Please practise writing the following words at home.
go, no, you, are, chop, chin, shop, ship
We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Maths
In maths we have used a variety of resources such as: whole-part models, ten frames and dominoes to help us understand number bonds. The children have been practicing writing number sentences and are becoming very good at it.
Next week we will introduce Cuisenaire rods. We will learn rod values and we will use the rods to make up quantities.
The children should spend at leas 20 minutes a week on Maths seeds.

In PE the children have been mastering their basketball skills coached by Mr Mills. We have lots of competitive players in Year 1!
I won't be in school for a couple of days next week but all the lessons will be taking place as usual . I am looking forward to the telephone Parent-teacher consultations on Thursday the 15th of October. If you haven't booked your slot yet, please remember to book one. If you are unable to talk to me on the day, please email me so we can arrange an alternative date.
Enjoy the weekend!

Can I please ask that the children bring their book bags to school every day from next week.

And finally, next week is Walk To School Week, celebrating ‘Clean Air Day on Thursday 8th October.  We are encouraging as many of you as possible to walk, cycle or scoot to school throughout next week.  If your journey is too far to walk, then you could try to drive partway then walk the rest.

Thank you very much for your support.

Have a good weekend

Hello all,

Another week has flown by. In literacy we have been practising the phase 3 sounds and writing words and sentences with the new sounds.

We continued with practising our letter formation ( letters: c, a, o, s, d, e) and I am pleased to say that the children are making a very good progress in their writing ability. Please encourage writing at home.

During the week we have focused on the following letter sounds: igh, oa, oo, ar, or.

Next week we will revisit: ur, ow, oi, ear.

We will make sentences with the tricky words: he and she.

At home you could play a following game with your child. Write words on the cards e.g. moon, snail, shop, chin, night, goat, zoo, car, fork. Turn the cards upside down. Taking turns with your child choose one card at a time , read the word , than make up a sentence with this word. This will help the children to develop an ability of making up sentences independently.

Throughout the week we were reading and discussing The Smeds and The Smoos story by Julia Donaldson. The children were sharing their ideas of how to to be kind and friendly to others.

The children  have worked very hard to make their own  The Smeds and The Smoos books. Their illustrations are fantastic!!!

Next week we will  finish our books by adding more illustrations and writing, and we will continue learning about Space.

Maths

In maths the children were introduced to whole-part models. We were looking at different ways of making up numbers and were recording our findings.

Next week we will use ten frames to practise number bonds up to 10.

Please practise number formation 1-10 at home.

We had individual school photos today. All children looked very smart and showed their beautiful smiles for the camera.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Sheehan

Hello all,
We have had another busy week full of learning and fun.
This week we have carried out our two volcano experiments using various methods.. Our first experiment was with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, the second one with coke and Mentos mints. Both worked well and the children were very excited to observe the volcanos erupting. They have created beautiful pictures of volcanos for our display.

Maths
In maths we have concentrated on 2D shapes. Using a variety of resources the children have created the shapes and have drawn them marking the numbers of corners.
Next week we will use whole-part models to make up quantities.

Phonics
During the week we have revisited digraphs; sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee.
Please make a poster or a mat at home with the sounds we are learning at school so that the children will be able memorise the sounds faster.
We have also been working on making labels for pictures and were writing short sentences with our tricky words: I, She and He.
Next week we will continue with phase 3 sounds and the tricky words.

Pen Pals
This week we were practising one-armed robot letters: r,h,n,m,p,k,b, as well as curly caterpillars: c,o,a.
Next week we will continue with the curly caterpillar letters.

In our classroom we have a space role play are.. Next week we will learn about space. We will read information books and  The Smeds and The Smoos by Julia Donaldson. We will engage in variety of activities related to the story.

Individual photos
On Friday individual photos of children will be taken at school. Please make the children looking extra smart. They can wear their winter uniform on the day.

When collecting the children please line up on the side where the children are dismissed from, This is for the safety of your children.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Have a lovely weekend!
Mrs Sheehan

Friday, 11 September 2020

Hello all,

It has been a very busy and an exciting week at school. The children are now familiar with the new  building and with the new routines which makes our days at school run smoother.

This week our learning was based on Paul Gauguin's painting "Road in Tahiti". The children enjoy discussing the features of the painting and have created beautiful pieces of art work. One of the features which captured the children's imagination mostly was a volcano. We have agreed that we are going to research volcanoes and carry out a volcano experiment next week.

Phonics

During the week we have revisited Phase 2 letter sounds and have practised blending and segmenting. Next week we will move on to Phase 3 sounds and will apply our phonics knowledge in writing.

Each day we practise letter formation following the Pen Pals programme. So far we have practised letters: l,i,t,j,u,y,r,n,m,b,h,p. Please have pens and paper readily available at home so that the children can spontaneously engage in drawing and writing.

Maths

The children had fun taking part in variety of measuring activities. They especially enjoyed measuring the classroom using their bodies e.g. steps, elbows, hand span, etc.

Next week will combine measurement with 2D shapes.

Please note that the reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays. The children don't need to bring their book bags to school on the other days.

When collecting your child please stand by the gate so your child and I can clearly see you. The pick up times are very busy and we want to avoid any accidents.

If you have any questions please send me an email.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Mrs Sheehan
