Hello everyone,

It’s been a very busy and exciting week in Year 1!

In English, the children have been working with the story The Tiger Who Came to Tea. They’ve been sequencing the events, describing the tiger using some fantastic adjectives, and writing a shopping list for Sophie to use after the tiger’s unexpected visit! We’ve also begun our daily phonics lessons, revising Phase 2 and 3 sounds and tricky words. Alongside this, the children have started their group reading sessions, which take place three times a week.

In Maths, we’ve been sorting and counting objects, including counting from larger groups. The children have enjoyed using practical resources to support their learning and develop their number sense.

In History, we introduced our topic on Toys from the Past. The children had a lovely time drawing and writing about their favourite toys, and we had some great discussions about why those toys are special to them.

Well done, Year 1 — you’ve worked so hard this week, and we’re really proud of you!

Next week

English

The children will be working from the book ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon to learn about adjectives. They will be making lists and writing sentences to describe the character of Beegu.

Maths

The children will be recognising numbers as words, counting on from any number and finding 1 more and 1 less. The children will also be focusing on number formation. We’ll be practising how to form each number correctly, using a range of fun and hands-on activities to help develop their confidence and fine motor skills.

PSHE

The children will be thinking about the people and places that make them feel special and safe.

History

The children will be describing toys.

Music

We will be practising out Harvest Festival songs.

Reading books

This week, we have assessed the children and provided them with reading books matched to the sounds and tricky words they are secure with. Alongside their decodable reading book, they have also chosen a library book to enjoy being read to.

Please support your child by reading their decodable book together and commenting in their reading record about how they found the book.

Thank you for your continued support. We hope you all have a lovely weekend!
