 Good Evening Everyone,

 

In English the children have worked extremely hard, writing their own story based on the book ‘Send for a Superhero.’ They extended their sentences by using conjunctions and included exciting adjectives. Well done Year 1, I have loved reading them!

 

In Maths, the children started a new topic based on ‘addition and subtraction within 20’. They added by counting on within 20 and explored number bonds.

 

In Art, the children created beautiful observation drawings of a variety of flowers. They paid close attention to the shape, size, colour and fine detail on the different parts of the flower.

 

In RE, the children learnt about Baptism. Next month, they will have the opportunity to visit Christ Church where the Vicar will demonstrate what happens during a Baptism service.

 

Next Week:

Maths- The children will find and make number bonds to 20, double and find near-doubles.

 

English- The children will begin a new topic of work based on the book, ‘The Comet’ by Joe Todd-Stanton. They will be making posters and writing letters of advice.

 

History- We will find out about how the Tower of London’s use has changed over time.

 

Computing- The children will develop their keyboard skills

 

Art- The children will continue to create observational drawings

Good evening everyone,

In English, the children learnt about verbs and used the suffixes ‘ing’ and ‘ed’ in some sentences. They also wrote an email to a character from our class story ‘Send for a Superhero.’ They used conjunctions and adjectives to make their sentences more interesting. In phonics this week the children learnt the graphemes ‘le’, ‘al’, ‘c’ and ‘ve’. They also learnt the tricky words ‘school’, ‘call’, ‘different’ and ‘ask’.

 

In Maths, the children are continuing with the topic ‘Place value to 20’. This week they have been using number lines to label missing numbers, finding 1 more and 1 less and estimating where a number might be located.

 

In Art, the children went on a nature walk around the school collecting natural objects that they would like to draw. When we returned to class the children created amazing observational drawings, paying close attention to the shape, colour and size of these objects. I was so impressed with their creations.

                           

In Computing, the children are continuing to develop their mouse skills by clicking and dragging in order to create a picture. They are really enjoying these lessons and are being so sensible and responsible when handling and logging onto the Chrome Books.  

 

 

Next Week:

Maths- The children will be comparing and ordering numbers to 20. They will also begin a new topic ‘Addition and Subtraction within 20.’

 

English- The children will use simple noun phrases to label their own superhero. They will then use a story mountain to plan a superhero story. They will also begin writing the beginning and middle of their story.

 

History- The children will find out about the people who lived in medieval castles.

 

RE- We will begin to learn about Baptism.

Good Evening,


The children have worked so hard this week, well done everyone!

 

In English, the children used adjectives to label a picture of a Superhero. They wrote letters to a Superhero asking for help to defeat the baddies ‘Filth’ and ‘Vacuum’ from the story ‘Send for a Superhero.’ They also learnt about plurals and when a ‘s’ or ‘es’ should be used. In phonics the children have learnt the alternative pronunciations for the graphemes ‘y’, ‘ow’, ‘g’ and ‘ph’. They have also learnt the tricky words ‘who’, ‘whole’, ‘where’ and ‘two’.

 

In Maths, the children have been learning about place value to 20. They have explored the numbers 14-20 using counters, dice, Numicon, bead strings and multi-link cubes.

 

In today’s Computing lesson, the children used the Chrome Books for the first time. They learnt about the different parts of a computer and practised their mouse skills by dragging and dropping.
























 

Next Week:

Maths- The children will continue to explore and use a number line to 20, estimate, compare and order numbers.

 

English- The children will learn about verbs, the suffixes ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ and they will use conjunctions to extend sentences

 

Art- Observational drawings 

 

History- The children will find out about the structure of medieval castles.

 

PSHE- The children will consider how they can work well with a partner. In pairs, the children will have to design a pair of wellies.

 

RE- The children will think about the special ways people welcome a new baby. This will lead onto them finding out about Baptism.

 

Commuting- The children will continue to develop their mouse skills by opening a program, clicking and dragging, and creating a picture.

I have given the children a Phonics home learning sheet that contains all the new sounds and tricky words that they have learnt over the last 2 weeks. It contains the new phoneme, plus words and sentences containing that phoneme that the children have read during the week. Please practise reading these at home. Thank you!

 Welcome back, 

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful Christmas break; it has been lovely to see the children after the Christmas holidays full of excitement and wonderful stories.

In English, the children started a new unit of work based on the book ‘Send for a Superhero’ by Michael Rosen. They were introduced to the two ‘baddies’ in the story called Filth and Vacuum. They used the conjunctions ‘and,’ ‘because,’ ‘or’ and ‘but’ to write about these characters. They also used adjectives to create wanted posters for the character of ‘Vacuum’. 

In Phonics, the children have learnt the Phase 5 graphemes ‘y’ as in happy, ‘ea’ as in head, ‘wh’ as in wheel, ‘oe’ as in toe and ‘ou’ as in shoulder. They also learnt the tricky words ‘any,’ ‘many’ and ‘again.’ 

In Maths, the children started a new topic on place value to 20. They have explored the numbers 10, 11, 12 and 13. They have made and explored these numbers using counters, dice and multi-link cubes.

In History, the children started their new topic based on ‘Castles.’ They looked at a variety of castles in the UK and found out who built the first castles and why.

In Science, the children continued to explore the season of Winter by observing and drawing a tree in the playground that they previously drew in Autumn. We also tracked the weather, focusing on weather symbols and temperature.

Next week

English- The children will use adjectives to describe superheroes, they will think of and write questions to ask a character from the book ‘Send for a Superhero.’ They will make a list of accessories a Superhero might need and explore plurals.

Maths- The children will explore the numbers 14-20, find 1 more and 1 less and use a number line to 20. 

History- The children will find out about UK castles that were built by the Normans.

PSHE – The children will identify their successes and describe how this makes them feel proud.

RE – The children will explore how they belong to a family and community. They will draw and write about something that is important to their family 

ICT- The children will be switching on and logging onto a computer and use a mouse to drag and drop.
