Week ending 15th July 2021

 Hello Year One,

As we are coming to the end of the school year we have had lots of work to complete and jobs to do. The children completed a comprehension on foxes, made books for a relative in their families and have been learning place value during our maths lessons. We went to explore Africa this week and the children tried out a tribal dance. They wrote about the culture, climate and food in Africa and drew some amazingly colourful pictures.

They have also been working from maths booklets which they haven't completed so I have sent them home for a rainy day in the holidays!

Next week we will be working our way through the list that the children created of their favourite activities. This includes songs, games, water play, play doh, jigsaws and parachute games. On Monday morning we will be watching Year Six play the teachers at rounders. After lunch we will have a our classroom cinema treat. Please let me know if your child cannot have popcorn, marshmellows or ice lollies.

On Tuesday we will continue with our fun activities and school ends at 2pm.

I wish you all a happy weekend.

Week Ending 9th July 2021

 Hello Year One,

What an exciting week we have had! It all began with sports day on Monday. The children enjoyed every moment and it was great to see them so happy and working together in teams.

This was followed by 'The Apprentice' on Thursday, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. It was the fun of choosing and ordering the goodies and waiting for them to be delivered that caused so much excitement. We have also had a week of football which the children are enjoying at home with family and friends.

This week we studied poetry for English and the children wrote some wonderful poems about being at the seaside. You will see the other project as the children have taken their 'My Mum' booklets home for you to enjoy. Next week we will move on to 'My Dad' or 'My Aunty' as the children asked if they could do another one! It was a very popular activity.
We will continue to work on number for maths, counting in twos, exploring place value to hundreds, tens and ones. The children will be given a Summer maths booklet to work through. If they do not complete it in school they can take it home and finish it over the holidays.
We will be continuing with daily phonics, handwriting sessions, spellings, comprehension, group reading and writing.

We will be continuing to study animals next week as we explore the food they eat.

Our final country is Africa as the children will learn about the climate and culture.

               End Of Term Treat

We will have lots of fun during the last couple of days at school. We will be playing games, have            some team building competitions and we will watch a movie. I will be giving the children         popcorn and marshmellows as a treat.  If you do not want you child to eat either one or both of these please let me know.

Good luck England! We are all hoping for a good result! I hope you all enjoy the football on Sunday and have a restful weekend.

         Ms Davis

Week ending 2nd July 2021

 Hello Year One,

I have missed you all this week. It has been a strange week without seeing you, but I have been teaching in Reception which is great because I know them all well now and they know me so it will be an easier transition for them in September.

I hope you have made the most of your time at home. I have been looking at your learning and it seems that you have worked hard.

Next Week

We have so many exciting things planned for next week, but still have lots of learning to do.

For maths we will be working with number, counting in tens, fives and twos. You will continue your poetry project for English and I have some fun ideas for writing poems.

We will be travelling to Africa to learn about their climate and culture.

We will be thinking about what God is like in our RE lesson.

For science you will continue with the project about animals as we sort them into different categories.

Sports Day

As you all know Monday will be Year One's turn for Sports Day! Make sure you have a full PE kit and trainers in school. Remember your water bottles too.

The Apprentice

Next Thursday, 8th July, Year 6 will be carrying out a treats and drinks sale. This is usually done as a whole school event in the hall but due to Covid, this year it will be classroom delivery only.

The items for sale all range between 50p - £1.50 each and the Year 6 children will be competing against each other to raise the most money. All profits made from the event will go to the charity chosen by the winning team. Cash payments will be taken on the day by the Year 6 children who will ensure they follow Covid secure guidelines.

The children in the class watched adverts made by the Year 6 children today, so they will probably have a good idea about what they would like to buy. Please support this event next week to raise much needed money for a very worthwhile cause.

Andrew Gradwell

Deputy Head teacher and Year 6 teacher

I wish you all a restful and happy weekend.

Week ending 18th June 2021

 Hello Year One,

We have had a very busy week. As it has been sunny the children have been able to work outside with water, measuring and estimating capacities.

We have been working on fractions in relation to capacity and length. They have really enjoyed this as it was mainly practical maths. For English we have been writing a recount of a story, working on our handwriting, spellings and phonics. We have carried out a task whereby the children had to recognise different phonemes that make the same sound and a comprehension activity.

We travelled to Asia for our geography project and the children were able to locate China on a map of the world, colour the Chinese flag and make a Chinese dragon, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

NEXT WEEK

English

We will be creating our own stories about finding a stick that can become many things. It will be an adventure story and I am sure the children will enjoy this.

Maths

Next week we will be learning how numbers can be different but equal in total. We will be using benchmarking to place numbers on number lines. The children will experiment with pan balances showing inequality and finally we will use known addition facts to choose efficient calculation strategies.

Science

We  are starting a new project 'Animals Including Humans.' The children will love this as they have a real passion and interest in animals. For the first session we will be identifying and naming a variety of animals.

Geography

We will travel to Australia next week to investigate the culture, the animals that live there and where it is located on a world map.

Art

Monet is the artist we will be learning about this half term. we will explore his work and plan the painting we will create next week.

I wish you all a restful and happy weekend.

Ms Davis

Week ending 11th June 2021

 Hello Year One,

I hope you all had a great half term holiday.

The children came back full of enthusiasm and have worked hard on all their tasks and activities.

This week we began to look at fractions of shapes for maths. We began our 'Around The World' topic, which means we learn about one country in every continent. The children have been looking at world maps. It would be great if you could continue this at home and ask them to locate the seven continents.

We began a new book for English, called 'Not A Stick.' This week the children had to predict what the story may be about, by looking at the front cover.

We are revising our Phase Five phonics and working on handwriting and letter formation three times a week. I have started 'group reading' so that the children have a shared reading experience and they read at least three or four times a week in school. They are great when practising spellings at school but still need to work on them at home each week, at least three times.

NEXT WEEK

Maths

We will continue to work on fractions of shapes and move on to fractions in the context of capacity and length.

English

We will practise handwriting and spellings three times next week and phonics on a daily basis. We will hear readers in groups three times and at least once individually. The children will write a recount of our story, carry out a comprehension task for our science project and complete a grapheme/phoneme recognition activity.

Geography

We will be going to China next week and our focus will be on locating Asia on a world map, finding China within Asia and looking at 'Chinese New Year.' The children will make dragon puppets.

Science

Our focus will be on Summer and we will be walking round the school grounds using our sense to 'feel' Summer. The children will write about the season change.

Art

We are starting a project on the work of Claude Monet. I will introduce the children to his work and we will discuss his style, the colours he uses and any patterns and textures that can be found.

I hope you have a restful weekend and look forward to seeing the children on Monday.
