Hello everyone,
We’ve had another fantastic week in Year 1!
On Thursday, we were invited to Christ Church to take part in a special Harvest experience. The children explored Harvest through a variety of activities, learning about food from the sea, the earth, the grain, and the flock. It was a wonderful morning filled with hands-on learning, and we were so proud of how beautifully the children behaved. Well done, Year 1! We hope you enjoy the photos below.
In English, we have been working with the lovely story Coming to England by Floella Benjamin. The children listened carefully to the story and discussed what happened. They then sequenced the main events and made a list of things they may need to pack if they were going on a journey. We also talked about how Floella might have felt when she moved from Trinidad to England, and the children made connections by writing about a journey they have been on themselves.
In Phonics, we began learning the Phase 5 sounds: ‘ay’,
‘ou’, ‘oy’, and ‘ea’. The children have been practising reading and writing
words with these sounds — great work all round!
In Science, we continued our exploration of the season of
Autumn. The children enjoyed a nature walk around the school grounds, spotting
signs of the changing season. They also took time to sketch a tree near the
Foundation Stage unit, focusing carefully on its shape and colour.
Next week
English
We will be continuing our
work with the book Coming to England by Floella Benjamin. The children have
really enjoyed learning about Floella’s early life and her journey to a new
country with her family. Building on this, the children will be writing
sentences about themselves and their own families. They will also be drawing a
memorable part of the story and adding a caption to explain their picture.  They will also be focusing on using adjectives
to describe a place. The children will be encouraged to use descriptive
language to paint a picture with their words.
Maths
The children will continue
learning about addition and subtraction within 10. They will be introduced to
part-whole models to help them understand how numbers can be split and
combined. Using practical resources, the children will explore these concepts
in a hands-on way, supporting their understanding. They will also begin to
write their own number sentences to represent their work.
Science
The children will begin to
track the weather, observing changes in temperature and learning to recognise
and use common weather symbols. They will record their observations and begin
to think about how weather changes across the seasons.
History
We will be learning about
how toys have changed over time. The children will compare toys from the past
with the toys they play with today. We will be looking closely at LEGO and how it
has changed over the years.
Art
This week in Art, the
children will be drawing their self-portraits.
Reminder:
Reading books
Please ensure that reading
books and reading logs are returned to school no later than Wednesday each
week. There is a grey box by the door where children can place their books and
logs upon arrival. Thank you!
Have a wonderful weekend!
