Week ending 25th February 2022

 Hello Year One,

We have had lots of fun this week! The children spent much of their free platy session building 'islands' for animals and people. They were so proud of their sculptures!

For \English we have started to work from a new book 'Mr Postmouse' by Marianne Dubec. The children love the detailed homes in the illustrations and have been enjoying describing them and writing letters to thank Mr Postmouse for all his hard work.

We have continued to practice handwriting three times a week and have been learning the spellings of high frequency words.

For maths we have been investigating measures such as length, height, mass and speed. We ended the week with a car race which the children found great fun!

For our science lesson we focused on the changes from Winter to Spring. The children are beginning to recognise season change and describe the differences between the seasons now. We also estimated how much rainfall we will have in March and will be carrying out this experiment to see who was the closest to the correct amount.

On Thursday we took our trip to the church and listened to a wonderful explanation of baptism. The children loved being inside the church and were thrilled when they were given welcome cards to  decorate.

NEXT WEEK

English

The children will write a letter to one of the creatures in the story. They will use adjectives and hopefully at least one exclamation mark!
We will be carrying out an comprehension task next week.
The children will focus on the sounds 'ed,'  'est' and 'o-e.'

Next week we will focus on learning the order of the days of the week, months of the year and seasons in order. The children will have to know which months are part of each season.

ART

We will be working on self-portraits next week!

Geography

We begin a new topic next week called 'At The Farm.' The children will be learning about three different types of farming.

Week ending 11th February 2022

 Hello Year One,

We have had lots of fun this week. We listened to Greek music and learned a Greek dance.

As it was Internet Safety Week we had a lesson on how to use the internet safely and appropriately.

It was also Children's Mental Health Week so we have been talking about our emotions and how we can help each other with difficult or uncomfortable feelings.

Our math's lessons have been on shape this week and we have learned the names of many 2D and 3D shapes. We know the difference between a line and a shape and how to describe shapes according to the number of sides, length of sides and whether the sides are curved or straight.

The children wrote instructions on how to clean teeth and wash hands. They completed a comprehension task and an activity around the phoneme u-e.

Yesterday they wrote about their favourite experiences in Year One so far, which was great to read!

For history we looked at Victorian homes and the equipment they used such as dollies and mangles to do the washing and coal ranges to cook food.

We made Valentine cards and shape dragons too!

For the second half of the Spring term we will be working from a book called 'Mr Postmouse.' The focus will be on post and the process from writing a letter to it being delivered. There are other books I would recommend such as 'Meercat Mail' and 'The Jolly Postman.'

Following this we will be learning how to write a report and the focus will be dragons.

For science we will be looking at the changes between Winter and Spring. We will look closely at how the weather effects what we do, what we wear and our environment.

We will have a geography topic after half term. It is called 'At The Farm.' I will try to arrange a trip to a local farm.

I have booked a visit to our local church for Thursday 24th February, but I will wait and assess the  covid situation before confirming that this trip will go ahead.

I hope the home projects are going well. We have one 'home' in school already!

I wish you all a very happy and restful week off.

Week ending 4th Feb 2022

Hello Year One,

We have had a great week! The children have been exploring odd and even numbers this week and learnt to count in tens and fives.

We read a funny story about how to wash a woolly mammoth and the children wrote their own set of instructions on how to wash an animal of their choice!

We have been working on alien words this week and the children have made pleasing progress by breaking words down into manageable chunks when reading.

The children carried out a comprehension task and an activity which involved recognising split-vowel digraphs.

We looked carefully at a picture of a bike and explored the materials used to make it. We found that different materials were used for different reasons.

In the history lesson this week we looked at houses from medieval times to the present day. The children had to recognise the time periods that the houses came from.

Year One absolutely love parachute games and we had a great time with this on Thursday!

As it is Chinese New Year we have been listening to a variety of Chinese music and today we made up our own dance!

NEXT WEEK

English

We will be writing instructions on how to brush teeth and wash hands!

There will be a differentiated comprehension task to complete and another activity to recognise split-vowel digraphs. Next Thursday the children will produce some extended writing about their experiences in  'Year One.' They will be writing in the past tense about their experiences and memories. I will be looking for correct punctuation, use of adjectives and managing to write the whole piece in the past tense.

Maths

Next week is all about shapes! We will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes, learning the mathematical vocabulary needed to describe shapes and how to recognise the names of different shapes.

The children will also make a dragon face out of a variety of shapes.

History

We will be travelling back in time to the Victorian era and exploring their homes. We will find out what their homes were made of and look at the style of the buildings. We will look at what they had inside their homes.

PHSE

As it will be 'mental health week' next week we will be focusing on 'growing together' and there will be lots of activities to explore how we can live together happily and safely.

ART

The children will be creating Valentine Cards next week. I am sure this will be a popular activity!

I wish you all a healthy and happy weekend.
