 Hello everyone,

I can’t believe how quickly the week has gone by!

In English, the children have continued working with the story I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. They used speech bubbles to create a conversation between the bear and the rabbit, showing great imagination. They also explored the prefix ‘un’ to change the meaning of a word and practised using un words in sentences orally before writing some wonderful examples. The children also used the conjunction ‘and’ to add extra detail to their sentences.

In Phonics, the children learned the new sounds e-e, ie (as in field), ew and aw. They also practised the tricky words house, mouse, water and want.

In Maths, the children have been consolidating their learning on number bonds, part–whole models, and addition and subtraction.

In Geography, the children enjoyed carrying out fieldwork around the school. They used a map of the school grounds to locate and identify different features, such as buildings and outdoor areas.

In D&T, the children explored a variety of fruits and vegetables using their senses. They looked, touched, smelled and tasted the foods, then described them using words such as “sweet,” “juicy,” and “crunchy.” We were so impressed with their willingness and enthusiasm to try different fruits and vegetables.

The children have also thoroughly enjoyed practising for our Christmas play, Bethlehem’s Buzzing, and are already showing great enthusiasm and confidence.

Friday, 21 November 2025

 Hello everyone,

It’s been another busy – and very chilly – week in Year 1!

In English, the children began their new unit of work based on the book ‘I Want My Hat Back’ by Jon Klassen. They explored a collection of different hats placed on the tables and asked questions about them. We then started reading the story and discovered that Bear has lost his hat! The children wrote their own questions about the missing hat, remembering to use a question mark at the end. They also wrote sentences about Bear and showed great enthusiasm for the story. The ending was very surprising and they absolutely loved it!

In Phonics, the children learnt the split digraphs a–e, o–e, i–e and u–e. They also practised the tricky words could, would, should and our.

In Maths, the children have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. They named, described and sorted a range of shapes, and enjoyed exploring and making repeating patterns.

In Science, the children began exploring a variety of materials. They drew and labelled objects made from wood, plastic, glass, fabric and metal, using fantastic scientific vocabulary.

In Geography, the children worked in pairs to create messy maps of the classroom. They used different objects to represent furniture and features, thinking carefully about the layout and shape of the room. They found this activity great fun!

In D&T, the children carried out a survey to discover everyone’s favourite fruit. They then represented their results in a pictogram, showing excellent data-handling skills.

Well done, Year 1, for another fantastic week of learning!

Friday, 14 November 2025

 Good Evening,

What a fun and busy week we have had in Year 1!

We began the week with Odd Socks Day to mark the start of Anti-Bullying Week. The children enjoyed discussing why we wear odd socks and explored this year’s theme, “Power for Good.” Today they looked fantastic in their spotty clothes for Children in Need and they loved joining in with the BBC live event Activate with Joe Wicks. Thank you so much for your generous donations.

In English, the children sequenced key events from the story Cave Baby. They practised using capital letters, full stops, and the conjunction ‘and’ to join sentences. To finish the week, they wrote thoughtful sorry letters from Cave Baby to his mum, apologising for drawing on the walls.

In Phonics, the children learnt the alternative sounds for i, o, e and a, as well as the new tricky words Mr, Mrs, Ms and ask.

Next Week

Maths – We will begin a new topic on 2D and 3D shapes.

Friday, 7 November 2025

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the second half of the Autumn term! It was lovely to see the children back on Monday and to hear all about their half-term adventures.

In English, the children have been exploring the book Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson. When they arrived at school on Monday, they were surprised to find cave paintings on the walls—how mischievous! The children then wrote about a time when they had been a little bit mischievous themselves. They also described the woolly mammoth from the story and created some wonderful noun phrases to describe the other animals that Cave Baby saw.

In Phonics this week, the children learnt the sounds ‘ir,’ ‘ie,’ ‘ue’ and ‘u.’ They also learnt the new tricky words ‘their,’ ‘people,’ ‘oh’ and ‘your.’

In Maths, the children continued learning about addition. They explored the vocabulary associated with addition and applied their knowledge to solve a range of problems.

In Geography, the children used Google Earth to locate the UK, England, Potters Bar, and our school. They were so excited to spot familiar places on the map and particularly enjoyed seeing our school from an aerial view.

In RE, the children began learning about the religion of Islam. They showed great curiosity and respect as they discussed what they already knew and what they would like to find out.

Next Week

English – The children will continue working from the book Cave Baby. They will sequence key events from the story, use capital letters and full stops when punctuating sentences, begin to use exclamation marks, and use the conjunction and to join sentences.

Maths – The children will be introduced to subtraction using a range of practical resources.

PSHE – The children will take part in activities for Anti-Bullying Week.

Geography – The children will work in groups to create ‘messy maps’ of the classroom.
