 Good afternoon,

We have had a very busy week and the children have worked so hard. Well done everyone!

On Monday, the children attended an assembly where they heard about the Book Fair that will be visiting the school at the end of next week. They also found out about the Book Fair competition; entry forms were handed out to the children who wanted to participate and these need to be returned to school by Tuesday 1st October.

In English, the children made ‘lost’ posters to help find Beegu. They also pretended to be Beegu and wrote speech bubbles about what their experience on planet Earth was like. They continued with their daily Phonics lesson and read in a group with an adult.

In RE, the children began learning about Harvest Festival. They went on to draw and write about things in their lives that they are thankful for.

In Science, the children were learning about the parts of the body. They worked together to label individual parts of the body.

Friday, 20 September 2024

 Hello,

Year 1 have had a very busy week of learning!

In English, we have been working from the story ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon. The children have used adjectives to write sentences about Beegu’s appearance. They have also made lists to describe how Beegu felt when her spaceship crashed down to Earth. We have also continued with our daily phonics lessons (recapping the Phase 2 and 3 sounds and tricky words) and read in a group 3 times with an adult. Next week, the children will begin Phase 4 phonics.

In Maths, the children have been working hard to count on from a number, finding 1 more and counting backwards. They have also been practising their number formation.

In History, the children are really enjoying our topic based on ‘Toys Past and Present.’ They were so excited telling each other what their parents, carers and grandparents liked to played with when they were children. We looked at some old toys and described their appearance.

In Music, the children have been working with Mrs Lawrence to learn our harvest songs, in preparation for the Harvest Festival assembly on Friday 4th October.

Next Week

English - The children will continue to work from the book ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon to create lost posters, they will also use adjectives to write about one of their friends and they will explore and write in speech bubbles.

Maths – The children will be finding 1 less, exploring the vocabulary ‘fewer,’ ‘more’ and ‘the same’ and ordering groups of objects using this vocabulary.

History – The children will be finding out what toys were like at different times in the past.

R.E. - The children will find out about harvest traditions.

Science- The children will begin the topic ‘animals including humans’ by naming and labelling the parts of the human body.

Friday, 13 September 2024

 Hello,

We have had a very busy week of learning in Year 1. The children have been working so hard, well done everyone!

In English, the children have been working from the story ‘Peace at Last’ by Jilly Murphy. They have been drawing and writing about a memorable part of the story and creating story maps to recount the events. They have also made a list of things that ‘Baby Bear’ needs to do in order to get a good night’s sleep.

In phonics the children began Phase 4 which recaps on the Phase 2 & 3 sounds and tricky words. They also read in a group. The children have been sent home with a decodable book to read and a story book to enjoy. We would appreciate it if you could make a comment in their reading record and return all books by Wednesday at the latest. Thank you!

In Maths, the children have been busy sorting and counting objects, using tens frames and counters to create numbers and recognising numbers as words.

In History, we began our topic based on ‘Toys Past and Present.’ The children really enjoyed drawing and describing their favourite toy. I encouraged the children to talk to a Parent, Carer or Grandparent about their favourite toy as a child and next week we will be discussing this.

The children have also visited other classrooms to place their House vote for the Year 6 House Captains.

Next Week

English - The children will be working from the book ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon to learn about adjectives. They will be making lists and writing sentences to describe the character of Beegu.

Maths - The children will be counting on from a number, finding 1 more, counting backwards within 10 and finding 1 less.

History - The children will be finding out about what toys their Parents, Carers and Grandparents played with when they were children.

R.E. - The children will find out about being thankful and harvest traditions.

PSHE - The children will continue to explore the topic ‘Being Me in my World’ by thinking about belonging to the Year 1 Class.
