Week ending 24th February 2023

 Hello Year One,

It was great to see the children after the half-term break.

This week we have been reading a new book called 'Here Comes Mr Postmouse' by Marianne Dubec. As the focus of this book is about post, we watched a short film of the journey of a letter. The children were able to sequence this journey. The children have been writing about the characters in the story.

For our maths lessons we have been learning how to think 5, 10 and 15. This aids addition. The children used tens frames to demonstrate how this works.

The children learned how to draw a self-portrait. They learned how to mark the features of the face before drawing them.

We went to Christ Church on Thursday to learn more about Baptism. The children had a great time. They listened to  a talk about why people get Baptised and what each stage of a Baptism represents. They took part in several different activities related to Baptism.

Next Week

Maths

We will begin a new maths number topic. The children will be finding different ways to make the same total. They will be doing this using a variety of maths equipment. They will be working on their number bonds to twenty.

English

Next week we will be writing descriptions of the different homes in ' Here Comes Mr Postmouse.'
We will be learning how to draft a letter and write a final copy. The final activity will be to create an invitation to a party at one of the animal's homes.

Science

The focus will be on the weather. The children will be learning more about the changes in weather and how this links to the seasons. They will learn the symbols used to record and read the weather. Finally they will record the weather daily using a chart and symbols.

Geography

The children will be learning about the features of farms. They will be describing what the buildings and fields are used for and will be looking at a map of a farm.

PHSE

We will continue to look at keeping healthy and the children will draw pictures, use labels and speech bubbles to show different ways of keeping healthy.

RE

Following our trip to Christ Church this week, the children will be writing about the meaning behind Baptism. They will reflect upon the rituals that are carried out during a Baptism and what they represent.

Week ending 10th February 2023

 Hello Year One,

The children seemed ready for the holiday as we said goodbye today! They have been working hard at school and completed so much.

This week we have been learning the order of the days of the week and the months of the year. If your child is still unsure could you help them with this over the holiday. They have also been learning which months fall in each season. They have been recognising events throughout the year and noticing which season or month they occur in. There are many videos and songs to support this on You Tube.

The children have been writing instructions this week. They wrote instructions for pizza making, cleaning teeth, washing an animal and planting a seed!

We completed our project on 'Homes from the Past,' by researching Victorian furnishing . The children were very surprised about the lack of electricity and toilets!

For science we looked at Winter and the changes that occur in our environment during this season. We recognised how we have to dress differently when it is cold and how our activities change.

There are no spellings this week.

I have some handwriting sheets for you all to take home after the holiday.

Next Half-Term

We will be reading a book called 'Here Comes Mr Postmouse.' The children love this book as the illustrations are amazing and each home has a story to tell. We will be working from ideas generated by this book. The children will sort the sequence of a letter's journey from being written to arriving on someone's doorstep. They will be writing invitations, postcards and letters to their friends.

For science we will continue to explore Winter and start to look at the Spring changes. There will be a woodland walk at some point in the Spring. We will also be exploring the weather and learning to read weather symbols. The children will describe the weather in the different seasons and we will be carrying out a rainfall experiment.

Our geography topic will be about farming and the children will learn about the importance of farms, the different types of farming and will learn to read a map.

For Religious Education we have been learning about Baptism and we will go the Christ Church on Thursday 23rd February as they will be showing the children the font, the larger pool they use and will be explaining the meaning of Baptism. The children will also be making craft items during the afternoon.

For PHSE we will be learning about keeping healthy.

I wish you all a very restful and happy weekend.

Ms Davis

Week ending 3rd February 2023

 Hello Everyone,

This week the children have learned about measures in their maths lessons. They compared lengths, mass, speed and time.

We have been reading the book 'How To Wash A Woolly Mammoth,' which is an instruction book. The children have been learning how to write clear, informative instructions.

We went back in time to look at how homes were made, what materials were used and what equipment was inside. They enjoyed noticing the differences through time and were glad they are part of the modern age!

In our RE lesson the children focused on who is important to them at home and school. They explained why certain people mean so much to them.

We carried out an experiment in our science lesson. We have been exploring materials and this week we needed to make an umbrella for a teddy bear. The children were shown a variety of materials and had to predict which one would be the best to make the umbrella with. They carried out the experiment and completed a table showing the results.

Next Week

English

We will be continuing our work on instruction writing. The children will be writing instructions on how to clean their teeth and how to plant a sunflower seed.

Maths

Next week the children will be learning the order of the days of the week and the months of the year. They will expand on this by learning which months are part of each season and how certain events are seasonal.

RE

We will continue to explore Baptism as we will be visiting the church after half term for a more in depth exploration.

Science

Our focus next week will be Winter. We will reflect on the walk to the woods last week and how the natural environment had changed. We will be learning vocabulary associated to the seasons and the children will write a description of their findings.

History

The children will be exploring Victorian homes. They will compare modern homes to Victorian homes and notice the differences and similarities.
