In English, the children finished writing their recounts based on the book ‘Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion.’ They have really enjoyed their learning based on this story and have created amazing recounts that have been made into books.

 

In Maths, the children have finished their topic based on ‘multiplication and division.’

 

In RE, the children heard the story about ‘The Prodigal Son’ and wrote about the moral of this story.

 

In PSHE the children have described the ways they have changed and stayed the same since they were a baby.  

 

Next week:

 Maths- The children will be recognising and finding a half of an object or shape, recognising and finding half of a quantity and recognising and finding a quarter of an object or shape.  

 

English- The children will be starting their new topic based on ‘explanation texts.’ We will be working from the book ‘The big book of bugs’ by Yuval Zommer.

 

Geography- Finding about where in the world is China.

 

Science- The children will be exploring seasonal changes from Spring to Summer.

 

ICT- The children will be exploring the directions left, right, forward and backwards. They will then plan routes for a ‘Beebot’ robot.

Good evening all,

 

We have had a very busy first week back at school after the half term holiday!

 

In English, the children have been working hard on their recounts based on the book ‘Little Red and the very hungry Lion.’ In phonics they have revising the Phase 2, 3, 4 and 5 sounds and practising reading real and ‘alien’ words in preparation for the Phonics Screening check next week.

 

In Maths, the children have continued to practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. They have also been recognising equals, adding equals and making arrays.

 

In Geography, the children have been learning about human and physical features.

 

In RE, the children heard the story about ‘Jonah and the Whale’ and wrote about it.  

 

Next week:

 

Maths- The children will be doubling and making equal groups. They will also begin their new Maths topic based on ‘Fractions’.

 

English- The children will be finishing their recounts of the story ‘Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion.’

 

Geography- Mapping the local area.

 

Science- The children will learn about deciduous and evergreen trees.

 

RE- The children will hear the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’ and they will write about a time they have helped someone in need.

The children were absolutely amazing today for their class assembly and we were so proud of them all. They spoke so well and sang beautifully; well done everyone!

The Year 1 team

 

We’ve had a very busy and very enjoyable week in Year 1!

 

This week the children had another fantastic afternoon planting spring onions, radishes, potatoes, beetroot, lettuce and sunflowers. The children have thoroughly enjoyed planting and watering the variety of plants and vegetables and I’m sure they will be excited to see them grow over the coming weeks. We continued with our History topic ‘Famous Queens’ and we learnt all about Queen Victoria and the Victorian period. In Maths the children have been extending their understanding of place value to 50. We have been counting in 10’s and grouping objects into 10’s to help with counting larger quantities of objects. Next week we will continue to count in 10’s and I have encouraged the children to practise this at home. In English, the children have worked very hard on their non-chronological report about Bats which they completed this week  

 

Next week:

 

Maths- Using a number line up to 50, estimating on a number line up to 50 and finding 1 more and 1 less up to 50.

 

English- Using the story ‘Little Red and the very hungry Lion’ by Alex T Smith, the children will be writing character descriptions, making notes and creating a story map.

Phonics booster lessons

If your child has been invited to the phonics booster sessions, you will have received a letter today. Each child will be attending Monday-Thursday and the sessions will begin at 8.25am. Please ensure your child attends on time. These sessions will continue until mid-June after the phonics screening for Year One.

 

Class Assembly

The children are very excited to share their work with you on Friday 18th May. I will send home speaking parts on Monday. If your child has a speaking part, please practise with them as it will boost their confidence.

This week the children had a great afternoon planting broad beans and potatoes. They also learnt how to look after them over the coming weeks. Next week the children will be planting carrots and beetroot. We continued with our History topic ‘Famous Queens’ and we learnt about Elizabeth I and the Tudors. It was Maths day on Wednesday and the children created block graphs and pictograms based on Year 1’s favourite fruit and books. They also really enjoyed learning about what the buttons did on a Beebot.

 

Next week:

 Maths- The children will continue to learn about place value to 50.

 

English- The children will finish writing their non-chronological report about bats. Towards the end of the week they will begin their new English topic based on ‘traditional tales.’

 

History- The children will be learning about Queen Victoria and her reign.

 

RE- The children will be learning about the ‘Qur’an’ which is the central religious text of Islam.

 

Science- The children will be planting various vegetables.

 

ICT- The children will learn about directional vocabulary in order to describe the movements of a Beebot

In English, the children have been learning about non-fiction texts through the book ‘Bats’ by Megan Cullis. They have been identifying the features, summarising information and generating questions that they would like to find out the answer to.

 

In Maths, the children completed their unit based on mass and volume.

 

Next week:

 

Maths- The children will be learning place value to 50. They will be counting in ones and tens to 50, making groups of tens and ones and partitioning. Maths day is on Wednesday and the children will be carrying out activities on statistics and data handling.

 

English- The children will be planning and writing a non-chronological report.

 

History- The children will be learning about Tudor life and Queen Elizabeth I.

 

RE- The children will be learning about the Christian sacred text ‘The Bible’.

 

Science- Identifying and naming wild flowers.

 

ICT- The children will be introduced to Beebot robots. They will talk about what the buttons on a Beebot might do and then try the buttons out.

I hope you had a lovely Easter!

 

It was wonderful to welcome the children back and hear all about their Easter holidays. This week we finished our unit based on the book ‘Hello Mr Postmouse.’ The children planned and wrote a letter to a character in the book.

 

In Maths the children began their new topic based on length and height. During the week they compared lengths and heights, measured objects using cubes and then measured the length of objects in Centimetres.

 

In PSHE, the children thought about what a family is and why their family is special. They then drew and labelled the members of their family.

 

In ICT, the children learnt how to use a search engine to find information.

 

Next week

 Maths- The children will be learning about mass and volume. They will measure and compare mass, volume and capacity and explore full and empty.

 

English- The children will begin their non-fiction topic which focuses on non-chronological reports.

 

Science- The children will be planting beans.

 

History- Understanding what a monarch is and where monarchs live.

 

ICT- The children will be developing typing skills.
