Hello everyone,

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 1!

Yesterday’s Sports Day was a real highlight. It was wonderful to see the children so happy, excited and full of energy as they took part in all the activities. A big well done to all the children for their enthusiasm, determination and excellent team spirit!

In English, the children enjoyed writing letters to Pig the Pug, showing great creativity and imagination. They also began planning and writing their very own ‘How To’ guide books, thinking carefully about instructions and sequencing.

In Maths, we started our new topic on time. The children explored the vocabulary of before and after before learning about the days of the week and the months of the year.

In Geography, the children loved learning about the seven continents, especially singing the continents song! Using maps, they located the UK, Europe, China and Asia. We also began exploring the human and physical features of China, which sparked some thoughtful discussions and lots of curiosity.

In PSHE, we reflected on how much we have grown and changed since we were babies. The children shared all the amazing things they can do now, making it a lovely opportunity to celebrate their progress and achievements.

Next Week’s Learning

Maths – The children will continue exploring time. They will be learning to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour using both clocks and practical activities.

English – The children will finish writing their ‘How To’ guide books. They will also be learning about the suffix -ing and exploring prepositional language to help make their writing more detailed and interesting.

Geography – The children will be finding out what life is like in Shanghai and comparing it to places they already know.

ICT – The children will be exploring how to use a keyboard, developing their confidence with typing and using different keys.

RE – We will be reading the book Why is the Sky Blue? and thinking about our own interesting questions about the world, encouraging curiosity and reflection.

Friday, 5 June 2026

 Welcome Back, Year 1!

We have had a very busy and fantastic first week back after the half-term holiday. The children have settled back into school brilliantly, diving straight into their learning and showing great enthusiasm across all subjects.

The children were very excited to see how much their sunflowers had grown over the holiday. They have continued caring for them this week and have enjoyed making observations about their growth and the changes they have noticed. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and responsibility as they nurture their plants.

In Maths, the children completed their unit on place value to 100. They worked hard finding 1 more and 1 less and comparing numbers using the vocabulary greater than, less than and equal to. We also continued practising counting in 10s, which supported the children when using and counting with Base 10 equipment.

Our English lessons have been equally engaging as the children began a new unit based on the book Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey. They have enjoyed describing the characters using a range of adjectives and have shown great creativity when planning their own versions of the story featuring different pets. The children came up with some imaginative character names and have made a fantastic start to writing the opening part of their stories.

In Geography, we began our new topic, What is it like in Shanghai? We started by exploring the human and physical features of our local area, laying the foundations for comparing and learning about Shanghai in the coming weeks.

Next Week's Learning

English – The children will continue writing their Pig the Pug-inspired stories. They will also be learning about expanded noun phrases and how they can be used to add detail to their writing.

Maths – We will begin an exciting new topic on money. The children will learn to recognise and identify different coins and notes and start to explore their values.

Geography – The children will be developing their map skills by creating maps of the local area and identifying key human and physical features.

Science – We will be exploring the season of Summer. The children will go into the playground to observe and sketch the tree that we have previously drawn in Autumn, Winter and Spring. They will also add to the Summer section of our seasonal tree display in the classroom.

Design and Technology – Our new topic is Stable Structures. The children will begin by exploring the features of a toy garage and investigating how structures are designed and built.
