What a fantastic and busy time we’ve had in Year 1!

 

In Maths, the children have been exploring their new topic – Place Value to 100. They’ve been using 100 squares to count on from different numbers and have enjoyed working with base ten equipment to build and represent numbers. We’ve also started learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones.

 

In RE, we listened to the story of Jonah and the Whale. The children were very engaged and shared some thoughtful ideas as we explored the theme of forgiveness.

 

During our D&T sessions, the children began thinking about food hygiene. They created bright and informative posters to show what they’ve learned. They also had fun making a list of ingredients they would like to include in their own fruit salad.

 

In Geography, the children created fantastic maps of the local area and used keys and symbols to represent important features.

 

In Science, we have been enjoying the great outdoors. The children explored the playground to look for signs of summer, and went on a mini beast hunt using bug pots to take a closer look at their discoveries. They showed wonderful curiosity and care during their observations.





























Next week:

 

Maths- The children will explore number lines to 100, find one more and one less and compare numbers.

 

English- The children will plan and create a fact-file for an animal.

 

Geography- Finding about where in the world is China

 

Science- We will observe and sketch the tree in the playground that we have previously sketched in Autumn, Winter and Spring.

 

ICT- Exploring using a keyboard.

 

RE- The children will learn about the story of the Good Samaritan.

 

PSHE- The children will explore the life cycles of animals and humans.

 

The spellings this week will focus on the Year 1 common exception words. The children will be introduced to some new phonics sounds on Monday which will be reflected in their spelling lists next week.

 

Spellings for next Friday’s test are:

 

Group 1: could, would, should, house, mouse, little, water, people, oh, their

 

 

Group 2: could, would, should, house, mouse

 

Group 3: the, to, I, no, go, into

Sports Day- Thursday 19th June

Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school. If it’s already in school, great! If not, please send it in by Monday so we’re ready for a fun and active day.
