Hello everyone,

 

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 1! Yesterday’s Sports Day was a real highlight – it was wonderful to see the children so happy, excited, and full of energy as they took part in all the activities. A big well done to all the children for their enthusiasm and team spirit!

 

In English, the children enjoyed writing letters to Pig the Pug, showing great creativity and imagination. They also began planning their very own ‘how to’ guide books.

 

In Maths, we’ve been busy working with base ten equipment to partition and build numbers up to 100. The children also used 100 squares to practise finding one more and one less, and explored number lines to deepen their understanding of place value.

 

In Geography, the children loved learning about the seven continents – especially singing the continent song! Using maps, they located the UK, Europe, China, and Asia. We also began exploring the human and physical features of China, which sparked some great discussions.

 

In PSHE, we reflected on how much we’ve grown and changed since we were babies. The children shared all the amazing things they can do now, which was a lovely celebration of their progress.

 

Next week:

 

Maths- The children will compare numbers and begin a new topic based on money

 

English- The children will be writing their ‘how to’ guides.

 

Geography- they will be finding out what Shanghai is like.

 

Science- We will observe and sketch the tree in the playground that we have previously sketched in Autumn, Winter and Spring. We were meant to do it this week however the afternoon was too hot to have the children sitting out.

 

 

RE- The children will learn about the story of ‘The Prodigal Son.’

 

PSHE – The children will be learning the human body parts and recognising that there are differences between males and females.

The Year 1 Team

 

What a fantastic and busy time we’ve had in Year 1!

 

In Maths, the children have been exploring their new topic – Place Value to 100. They’ve been using 100 squares to count on from different numbers and have enjoyed working with base ten equipment to build and represent numbers. We’ve also started learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones.

 

In RE, we listened to the story of Jonah and the Whale. The children were very engaged and shared some thoughtful ideas as we explored the theme of forgiveness.

 

During our D&T sessions, the children began thinking about food hygiene. They created bright and informative posters to show what they’ve learned. They also had fun making a list of ingredients they would like to include in their own fruit salad.

 

In Geography, the children created fantastic maps of the local area and used keys and symbols to represent important features.

 

In Science, we have been enjoying the great outdoors. The children explored the playground to look for signs of summer, and went on a mini beast hunt using bug pots to take a closer look at their discoveries. They showed wonderful curiosity and care during their observations.

Next week:

 

Maths- The children will explore number lines to 100, find one more and one less and compare numbers.

 

English- The children will plan and create a fact-file for an animal.

 

Geography- Finding about where in the world is China

 

Science- We will observe and sketch the tree in the playground that we have previously sketched in Autumn, Winter and Spring.

 

ICT- Exploring using a keyboard.

 

RE- The children will learn about the story of the Good Samaritan.

 

PSHE- The children will explore the life cycles of animals and humans.

 

The spellings this week will focus on the Year 1 common exception words. The children will be introduced to some new phonics sounds on Monday which will be reflected in their spelling lists next week.

The Year 1 Team

 

We’ve had a very busy but fantastic first week back after the half term holiday. The children have dived straight into their learning and have been showing great enthusiasm across all subjects.

 

In Maths, the focus has been on direction and position. The children have been exploring turns, left and right, and moving forwards and backwards through lots of practical activities.

 

Our English lessons have been equally engaging as the children have begun a new unit based on the book ‘Pig the Pug’ by Aaron Blabey. They have loved describing the characters using adjectives and have shown great creativity planning their own versions of the story with different pets. The children came up with some imaginative character names and have made a fantastic start writing the first part of their stories.

 

In Geography, we began our new topic, ‘What is it like in Shanghai?’ We began by exploring the human and physical features of our local area, setting the foundation to compare and learn about Shanghai in the coming weeks.

 

Finally, in Art, the children painted paper plates inspired by Clarice Cliff’s famous ‘Circle Tree’ plate. Next week, they will continue this project by creating trees by blowing black paint with straws!

 

Next Week:

English- The children will continue writing their ‘Pig the Pug’ style story. They will also learn about expanded noun phrases.

Maths- The children will continue use the vocabulary ‘above’ and ‘below’ to describe positions and they will also explore ordinal numbers. They will also start a new topic based on place value to100.

Geography- The children will map the local area.

RE- We will read and discuss the story of ‘Jonah and the Whale’.

Science- The children will explore the season of Summer.
