Welcome back,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful Christmas break; it has been lovely to see the children after the Christmas holidays full of excitement and wonderful stories.
In English, the children started a new unit of work based on the book ‘Send for a Superhero’ by Michael Rosen. They were introduced to the two ‘baddies’ in the story called Filth and Vacuum. They used the conjunctions ‘and,’ ‘because,’ ‘or’ and ‘but’ to write about these characters. They also used adjectives to create wanted posters for the character of ‘Vacuum’.
In Phonics, the children have learnt the Phase 5 graphemes ‘y’ as in happy, ‘ea’ as in head, ‘wh’ as in wheel, ‘oe’ as in toe and ‘ou’ as in shoulder. They also learnt the tricky words ‘any,’ ‘many’ and ‘again.’
In Maths, the children started a new topic on place value to 20. They have explored the numbers 10, 11, 12 and 13. They have made and explored these numbers using counters, dice and multi-link cubes.
In History, the children started their new topic based on ‘Castles.’ They looked at a variety of castles in the UK and found out who built the first castles and why.
In Science, the children continued to explore the season of Winter by observing and drawing a tree in the playground that they previously drew in Autumn. We also tracked the weather, focusing on weather symbols and temperature.
