Hello Year One,

I am missing all your smiling faces! I hope you have been doing the work I set you. Some of you have been sending me the stories you have written which I have enjoyed reading!

If you want me to look at any of your work or pictures you have created, please send them to me.

I know some of you have had difficulty completing the grapheme recognition tasks, so I am sending one now for either you or someone in your home to copy and mark. 

The sound is e, ea, ee, ie, e-e, y. Be careful as there are some graphemes that look like the sound but do not make the sound.

An enormous elephant stomped through the dusty path. His name was Eddy and he was looking for his friend Pete the python. Eddy had not seen Pete for a few days and felt worried about him. Suddenly a strange creature jumped out of the bushes. He had a huge beak, hairy feet, a big belly and eyes as big as saucers! 

Eddy was scared but pretended not to be. ‘Have you seen Pete?’ he asked the monster. The monster couldn’t speak, but nodded his head. He pointed to a tall tree and Eddy smiled. There was his sweet friend Pete, curled up fast asleep.

Week beginning 16th March 2020

Hello Year One,


Wow what a week! It has been strange having classes that are so small, but we have had a lot of fun!
Our walk to the woods on Tuesday was great. We noticed so many changes in the natural environment. Now that it is Spring we saw how the buds are appearing on the trees and flowers are growing and blooming. Some children saw tadpoles in the water and we loved listening to the woodpecker!



 On Thursday we turned the classroom into a farm. We made a video of 'A Day At Fairfield Farm.'

We also took plenty of photos.

The fun continued as a group of children went to the post box to post the letters that they had written.

Week beginning 9th March 2020

Hello Year One,


I am so pleased that you all enjoyed our science workshop. You were very good forensic detectives!
The children really enjoyed 'science week.' We have been recording the weather on a daily basis and have set up a rain gauge. The children have predicted how much rainfall there will be in the coming week. Some of them are very optimistic and have estimated 0mls!
The children wrote letters to their friends this week. They will be posted next week, so expect some mail!
We will be going for another walk to the local woods on Tuesday morning. If anyone would like to join us it would be greatly appreciated. We will leave here at 9am and return at approximately 10am. The children will be noticing the changes the natural environment from Winter to Spring and will be recording their findings on return to school.


NEXT WEEK


English


We will be focusing on 'report writing' next week. The children will be learning how to set out a report and include the important features. They will be writing their reports on Christmas in the UK, so if you could chat to them and generate some ideas that would be great.


Maths


The children will be learning about the coins up to 20p. They will be making combinations of values and matching values with different representations. They will recognise the coins and compare their shapes, sizes and colours.


Geography


We will be creating keys for maps of farms and designing the layout of farms.


Science


The walk to the woods will be the first step in our discoveries regarding the change of season. the children will be asked to look for specific plants and flowers that we would expect to see in Spring. They will return to school and we will discuss the changes we have found as a whole class. This will be followed by a drawing and labelling task in their books.


ICT


It is a great opportunity to research for our science topic. The children can find out about the change in seasons by searching on the internet.


PSHE


What happens when we are ill. The children will explore ways to help themselves when they feel unwell and the purpose of medication.

Week beginning 9th March 2020

Hello Year One,
We have had another exciting week as it was World Book Day on Thursday. We read so many stories! The children loved dressing up and had a fabulous day!

 

We had a busy week learning how to solve problems in our maths lessons and we have been counting in twos, tens and fives. We compared and found the difference between values.

We have completed 'Phase five' phonics and the children are now learning to read 'alien' words.

For geography we explored the features of farms and discovered what buildings and fields are used for. The children have remembered the different types of farms. I am hoping to take the children on a trip to a farm when the weather is warmer.

Next Week

English

This week we wrote a letter to Grandfather Postmouse. He was feeling lonely so we suggested ideas to cheer him up. Next week we will be writing to another creature from the book, followed by a letter to a friend in Year One. These letters will be posted, so expect a special delivery!

We will continue with daily phonics sessions and handwriting three times a week. The spellings for next week are as follows:

Maths

Next week we will be learning how to compare values and find differences in the context of statistics. We will be counting up to 200 and revising odd and even numbers.

Science

Could the children bring plastic bottles in again as we will be making rain gauges as we record and discuss the weather. We are looking at the changes from Winter to Spring. I would also like volunteers for a walk in the woods on Tuesday 17th March at 9am. This will take about an hour. The objective is to notice the changes from Winter to Spring. The children will also be looking for specific changes.

Geography

The children will be making keys for maps of farms adding the buildings that are necessary.

PHSE

Jack the Jigsaw will be passed around the circle and each child will remind us of one of the things we can do to keep healthy.

RE

This week we will be looking at prayer from other religions. The children will see artefacts used by different religions and we will reflect on the purpose of prayer.

Week beginning 24th February 2020

Welcome back Year One!

We have an exciting term ahead! We have already been to The Snow Centre, which was a fantastic trip. The children had great fun. It was great to see their beaming smiles and hear their shouts of joy. They were also extremely well behaved.

Spring Two Plans

English

We have already begun our new story topic. The book is called 'Here Comes Mr Postmouse' and it tells the story of a post creature delivering mail to many other animals. The illustrations are amazing and the children learn different aspects of the story every day as they explore the pictures.

There is a wealth of learning coming from this book. The children have already learned to sequence the process our mail goes through. They have written invitations and thank you cards. The children will begin to use question marks and exclamation marks now. They will be completing all of Phase Five Phonics. As we progress through the topic work the children will write letters to each other, label houses and rooms.

Towards the end of this term we will be looking at report writing, reading different reports and finally writing our own reports.

Maths

This week we have been looking at problem solving. The children will compare values using 1:1 and familiar structures, find the difference between values and solving problems using comparison and difference. We will be recognising and understanding the value of different denominations of coins and notes. This will progress to counting coin combinations and comparing and ordering different combinations of coins.

We will continue repeating our counting in twos, fives and tens highlighting the patterns and counting with coins.

Towards the end of term the children will measure and begin to record lengths and heights, mass, capacity and volume.

Science

We are focusing on Spring and Summer now. This is a great time of year to walk outside and notice the huge changes from Winter to Spring.  We will be finding out whether plants can live without water and light. The children will be learning how the length of the days change through the seasons and how this affects life forms. This topic will include exploring the weather and creating charts, recording the weather daily and using rain gauges.

Geography

'At The Farm,' links well with our science project as we explore different types of working farms. The children have already learned the difference between arable, livestock and dairy farming.

We will turn the class room into a farm and the children will role play a day on a working farm.

The children will learn how to read basic maps and how to use a key. They will be creating their own maps of farms. I am trying to arrange a trip to a working farm, I will keep you posted. We will be looking at the buildings used on farms and their purpose. This is a fun project and I am sure the children will love it!

ART

We will be looking at the work of Monet this term. The children will create their own versions of one of the paintings, using chalk pastels. They will use tissue paper to make lillies. They will paint extensions of one of the 'garden' paintings.

RE

We will continue to look at communities with a particular focus on the school. We will be thinking about how we can help and support each other at school.

The second section of RE this term is to explore praying, looking at the different types of prayer and worship and the objects used when praying.

Lastly we will cover 'The Easter Story.'

ICT

The children are gaining speed now when logging on to devices and using passwords. They will be discovering search engines and will carry out research for their projects by using books and the internet.

The children will use some of their ICT time to work on mathseeds.

PSHE

This term's topic is 'Healthy Me,' as we explore all the things we can do to maintain good health.

NEWS

• It is great to see some of the home structures coming in to school. They are amazing and so different! The children get really excited to explore a home as it comes to  school and they are extremely proud of their work. They also explain how they have enjoyed working with members of their families on this project. The homes are due in by the end of this term

• School reports will be taken home today. You can make comments on Gateway if you wish to.
