Week ending 25th November 2022

 Hello Year One,

We have had a busy week! We have been learning the vowels and split vowel digraphs in phonics and have written instructions and a letter as part of our English lessons.

In our maths lessons we have been learning about more and less. We Have been finding as many ways as possible to make a given number and learning our number bonds to ten.

We made a slider mechanism for our D and T project. The children learned the story 'The Gingerbread Man' and created a moving story board.

The children completed their divas by varnishing them and were very excited to take them home today.

We have begun rehearsals for our Christmas Production. Thank you all so much for organising costumes. 

The children have mastered the art of tidying the classroom this week, so we had time for parachute games outside which they really enjoyed!

NEXT WEEK

Maths

We will continue to look at 'less than' and 'more than' as we begin to recognise the difference between two numbers. We will also be exploring the language of 'fewer than' and 'greater than.'

English

We will continue to work on split vowel digraphs next week. The children are learning the vowels at the moment and we will also explore nouns.

Towards the end of the week we will be working on story sequencing. They children will finally re-write the story of 'Farmer Duck.'

Science

The children will continue to explore the senses and complete this part of our topic on The human Body.

RE

We will begin to learn about another festival of light as we listen to the story behind the celebration of Hannukah.

Spellings

The children were so pleased today as they were able to complete the spelling task successfully. It is clear that you have been working on this at home, thank you.

Week ending 18th November 2022

 Hello Year One,

What a fun week we have had! It all started on Monday with 'Odd Socks Day.' We discussed the reason we were all wearing odd socks and took some fabulous photos.

As it was 'Anti-Bullying' week we did a lot of work around what the difference is between being unkind now and again and actual bullying. We carried out role play scenarios and the children completed a task at the end of the week to show how they would react if they heard or saw someone hurting another child's feelings.

The children have been learning to recognise and use verbs and adjectives this week.

 

They have completed their history project on 'Toys.' The final task was to draw, label and describe one of the old toys at the museum.

For maths we have been working on finding parts and the whole of numbers by using cherry models.

The clay divas have been painted and varnished and look very colourful and bright. The children will be able to take them home next week.

Spellings were good this week. It really helps when the children practise them at home and they are so proud when they are able to spell the words at the end of the week.

Next week we will be looking at finding all possibilities of making numbers and exploring number sentences.

Science

We will continue exploring our senses and will play lots of games around guessing what you small, touch and hear.

Art

The children will use water-colour paints to create paintings in the style that Monet used. They will be given a print of half of a painting and will complete the other half.

D and T

The Story sliders will be completed next week as the children make the characters and tell the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' using the action of the slider!

Week ending 11th November 2022

 Hello Year One,

We have had a great week1

Our trip was fantastic. we saw so much , learned so much and enjoyed every moment of the day! The focus was on old toys and there was a floor dedicated to toys from the past, many of which I remember having as a child!

Most of the toys were hands on, so the children were able to enjoy the games and interaction.

The Whitewebbs Museum is actually a museum of transport, so the children experienced old cars, using a bus from the 1960's, old fire engines and ambulances and extensive train sets!

We also had a wonderful RE lesson this week as a member of our class dressed in her sari and did an Indian dance in front of the divas and candles. It was a magical moment! We have been learning about Diwali The Hindu festival of light.

I would like to create a Christmas grotto for the children in Year One and Two this year.

If you have an old Christmas tree that you no longer use or Christmas lights and baubles, it would great if you could bring them in.

Book Bags and Reading Records

To make life a little easier I thought I would remind you that the children only need their reading books in school on Thursdays and Fridays. The bags must contain their reading records and any book borrowed from school.

On Thursdays we write our notes in the reading records and on Fridays the children change their library books.

Spellings

Please  make a note of your child's reading group, either 1,2 or 3. This is written on top of the spelling lists they take home. From now on I will be sending the spellings out on a Friday and I will post them on my bog the same day. This means you have the weekend and all week to practise.

Maths

We will be re-grouping and finding the parts of a calculation and the whole. We are currently working on secure knowledge of our number bonds to ten. The children will be using tens frames to find hidden amounts as part of calculations.

English

Our focus will be on recognising and using verbs and adjectives as we continue to work from the book 'Farmer Duck.'

Science

The children will be given the opportunity to explore their senses. I will be bringing a variety of items into school for a guessing game. The children will reflect on how our senses help us understand and experience the world around us.

D and T

The children will be making their own story slider mechanism. They will hear the story of 'The Gingerbread man' and create a moving picture to tell the story.

Art/RE

As we have been learning about Diwali we will be creating rangoli patterns with chalk pastel crayons. The children made their own divas out of clay this week, so next week they will paint and varnish them.

 Hello Year One,

It has been a fabulous week as we have Miss Cooke here to work with us. She will be with us until the end of term.

This week we have been working on addition and subtraction in our maths lessons. The main focus is on the vocabulary used. Please see the list below which you can use to practise with your child:

We have started a new book 'Farmer Duck' by Martin Wadell and Helen Oxenbury. The children have predicted the possible endings for the story, carried out 'hotseating' activities, found all the verbs in the text and were able to recall the repetitive phrases.

The children have explored the Hindu festival of Diwali. They listened to the story of Rama and Sita and understood the significance of light. They wrote recounts of the story.

In our science lesson we learned the names for different parts of the body. The children were able to label the body parts and they enjoyed a body part bingo game!

Monday was the first day of spellings. The words relate to the learning in our phonics lessons. The children will be practising them at school each week, but we also expect them to do the same at home. They are familiar with 'look, cover, spell and check, therefore they should use this method at home. Every Friday the will be writing their spellings without seeing the words. Every Monday they will bring home a new set of spellings to learn for the Friday.

PE Kits

Please check your child's PE bag as some of the children were without kit for the lesson today. They should have clothes suitable for indoor and outside lessons. 

Reading bags

Please ensure that the orange reading record is in your child's bag every Thursday. This is the day that we write our comments following three reading sessions.

The ebooks are allocated on Thursdays and we love to hear your comments following reading the book with your child.

Reading

Please avoid reading the school books on the phone as it is not a big enough device. If you have any queries or concerns about this please let me know.

Next Week

The children are very excited as we will be going on our trip to Whitewebbs Museum on Tuesday. It is officially a museum of transport but has a whole floor devoted to old toys. This has been our history topic and the children will find it interesting, interactive and fun. We will be leaving school at 9.30am and will return before 3.10pm.

Don't forget that the children will need a packed lunch.

English

We will be learning about sentence structure and using adjectives as we describe a duck. We will continue to look at verbs and the children will make a list of plural nouns.

Maths

The children will be learning how to 'count on' and exploring ways to make five and ten. We will continue to write number sentences for addition and subtraction as we also carry on learning the vocabulary for these mathematical concepts.

History

We are going to spend a day at a museum exploring old toys. The children will choose one toy in particular and find out certain information about it. They will draw and write about this toy.

RE

We will continue to learn about Diwali as we discover the different festivals of light. We are lucky to have a member of the class who will dress in their costume for this festival. We will be making clay divas, which we will light up to experience the real flavour of  this festival.

Science

We will be learning about the five senses. The children will be given the opportunity to smell a variety of ingredients and suggest what they are. They will use a feely bag and describe what they are touching They will hear a variety of noises and describe them.

Week ending 21st October 2022

 Hello Year One,

We had a wonderful week and managed to complete all our projects!

It was great to see so many of you at 'Parent Consultations.' The children were so excited for you to see their work! They have put so much effort into their learning this half term and have enjoyed the activities they have carried out.

PE

PE kits will go home today. Some children have lost items of clothing from their kits. Despite ensuring that all clothes go back into PE bags there are still children with missing kit. Please check that your child has:

plimsoles (indoor PE)

trainers (outdoor PE)

shorts and a t-shirt (indoor PE)

track suit or jogging bottoms and sweatshirt(outdoor PE)

The children only need a drawstring PE bag to hang on their peg. This needs to stay in school all week. There is no need to wash the kit unless you would prefer to do so. PE kits are sent home on the last day of each half term.

Bags

The only other bag your child should bring to school is a book bag which should contain any school reading books and a reading record. 

There are still some children bringing large backpacks and bags into school which they hang on their pegs. This causes coats, cardigans and jumpers to fall on the ground as there is little space in the cloakroom. Please refrain from sending these large bags into school.

Autumn Two

English

Phonics lessons will take place every day. Group reading will be carried out three times a week and handwriting lessons will take place three times a week.

We will begin our lessons with the story 'Farmer Duck' by Martin Waddle and Helen Oxenbury. The children will be making predictions, understanding what nouns and verbs are and learning how to construct a sentence. They will be writing a letter, creating instructions and explaining the events that occurred in the story.

We will follow this with poetry lessons. I will give you the details nearer the time.

Maths

We will begin by exploring the language of addition and subtraction. The children will revise identifying the whole and parts of a model. We will be using 1:1 correspondence to find fewer and more than a given number. The children will understand  difference as the distance between two numbers.

I will update you as these lessons progress.

Science

The children will continue to explore seasonal change, particularly as Winter approaches. We will be creating a tally chart for the weather and will estimate rainfall. They will make a rain gauge and label it to show daily differences. There will be a focus on the symbols we use for weather and the children will record using these to show the changes on a daily basis.

As we explore the impact of the Winter weather we will research how animals and birds cope with extremes in temperature.

We will be learning about the human body will name and label the different parts. 

Finally we will be learning about the senses. I will send further information nearer the time.

RE

The focus will be festivals and celebrations as we explore three festivals of light. As we learn the story of Diwali we will create rangoli patterns and make clay divas.

For Hannukah we will read the story which explains the reason for this festival. we will play the traditional bingo game that is enjoyed by many at this time.

We will listen to 'The Christmas Story' and I am sure the children will be busy rehearsing for our Christmas production nearer the time.

Art

We will be learning about the artist Claude Monet and will look at a selection of his work. The children will discuss the colours, style, atmosphere and techniques he used. they will learn the effect of thick and fine paintbrushes as they paint their own Monet style pictures!

We will be making, painting and varnishing clay divas.

D and T

We will be learning the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' and the children will make sliders to create a moving picture.

The children will be making Christmas cards with a lever mechanism.

PHSE

We will be celebrating differences and sharing how in ways we are the same. We will discuss how we feel now that we have settled into Year One. 

The children will learn the song 'The Colours of friendship,' as we explore how it feels to make new friends.

Spellings

The children will be given a set of spellings every Friday. They can take them home and learn them by using look, cover, spell and check. There will be a revision of their learning every Friday as they spell the words without support.

Week ending 14th October 2022

 Hello Year One,

We have had a lovely week! Our walk to the woods was great! We learned so much about the changes to our environment that occur in Autumn. The children produced some detailed drawings, captions and sentences about Autumn.

We have been learning to order numbers, recognise consecutive numbers and link, sequence and count numbers. We have been using number lines and noticing when a number is not in the correct position.

We have written about our harvest experience at the church. The children recognise that we have harvest from the sea, from animals, from the ground and from grain. 

I am in the process of booking our museum trip to explore toys from the past. This will take place on 8th November. We expect to have enough staff to accompany us on the trip, therefore we won't need parental support. Further details will be sent to you nearer to the date of the trip.

The children will be learning to form capital letters correctly. We will be completing our character descriptions. We will complete the tricky words for this half term;

Maths

The children will be representing and using number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20. They will count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals. They will solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction.

Science

As we continue to explore animals the children will be learning about the food they eat. They will learn the terms herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.

Art

As we continue to learn about Autumn the children will be carrying out an observational drawing of a leaf.

PHSE

We will be looking at our families and where we live. We will describe them and draw them. We will write about the qualities of members of our family.

Notes

Please can I ask again that the children only bring their book bag into school each day. They do not need other bags. When they bring other bags into school and put them on their pegs there is little room for coats and cardigans. This causes clothes to fall off the pegs. 

Please can you make sure that your child brings his/her reading record into school on Thursdays. This is the day we write comments about your child's progress. The reading record should be in a reading bag which is placed in the box by the classroom door.

Harvest Celebration

Week ending 7th October 2022

 Hello Year One,

This week the children have written stories about losing a toy. They wrote about their feelings when this happened and how they felt when the toy was found!

We have been working on the vocabulary and understanding of fewer, more than, least, the smallest, the largest in maths. The children have been recognising pictorial representations of number.

Following our visit to the church, the children wrote about the different harvests and drew pictures to represent the celebration. 

Harvest Celebration

It was great to see so many of you this morning for the Harvest Celebration. The children have loved learning the songs and they sang their hearts out today!

Reading

Reading groups are progressing well and the children enjoy the shared experience. There are still a number of children without the reading records. Next week I will issue new records to any children who still do not have one in school. These records must remain in their book bags and come into school every day. The adults who hear them read write comments for you in these books and we would also like to know how you find the reading experience with your child.

Handwriting

As you are aware we follow 'The Little Wandle' programme for reading and writing. I am sending the letter formation sheets home for you to use with your child. 

Maths

I am sending you login details for the online maths programme that you can access for your child. If you have any queries about this please let me know.

Next Week

I am planning on taking the children for a walk in the local woods next Wednesday 12th October. We will be focusing on the changes to the environment in Autumn. I will need at least four parent/carer helpers. If you would like to come please let me know. We aim to leave school at 9am and are usually back just after 10am. 

The children will need to wear wellington boots and coats. 

The trip will be postponed if it is raining! 

 

English

Our focus will be identifying and describing characters and feelings. We will be reading the book 'Voices in the Park' by Anthony Browne.

The children will be writing about characters. They will be forming sentences and concentrating on the correct punctuation. We will be identifying the key events in the story.

Science

We will be focusing on the changes to the weather, the environment and wildlife in the season of Autumn.

Maths

We will focus on ordering values, ordering consecutive numbers, linking counting and sequencing.
