Week ending 30th October 2022

 Hello Year One,

We have had a wonderful week. Our trip to the church was great. The staff had created activities around harvests. The children looked at the harvest from the sea, the earth, the grain and from animals.

Reading 

The children are enjoying the reading sessions. On Thursdays I allocate the books to you so that you can read at home with your child and add a comment in their Reading Record.

The adults who hear the children read write their comments on a Thursday ready for you to read. There were several children without a Reading Record in school, therefore the adult who heard your child read was unable to write comments.

Please ensure that your child has a book bag or a named plastic bag which comes to school every day with their Reading Record and class book inside. 

This bag must be placed in the book bag boxes by the door, not in a bag on a peg.

NEXT WEEK

English

The children will be writing a story about losing a toy. We have been working from the book 'Where's My Teddy?' about a little boy who loses his teddy in the woods and several children were keen to explain about toys they had lost so this will be a great writing opportunity.

Maths

We will be counting varied representations of number and matching values to mathematical models and numerals. The children will be learning the vocabulary of 'more' and 'fewer,' 'more and 'less' and 'least.'

RE

The children will draw and write about harvest.

Science

We will be exploring the foods that animals eat and the children will learn the terms herbivore, carnivore and omnivore.

Art

The children will draw  self portraits.

Week ending 23rd September 2022

 Hello Year One,

We are getting used to many routines and changes at the moment and the children are managing this well.

Reading

The children need a book bag which they use for carrying their Reading Record and any books they may bring home. 

If you do not have a book bag yet please use a named plastic bag. These bags go in the boxes and need to be in school every day because we need access to the Reading Records, children put letters or notes for home in them and it is needed for books.

 The Little Wandle reading sessions are progressing well, but we are changing the process as of Monday 26th September. From then onwards all the groups will read at the same time, with different members of staff each week. The groups will rotate so that I can hear each child read regularly. 

The children have reading sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Thursdays the book they have been reading at school will be allocated to you electronically. The Reading Records will also be updated on Thursdays as each child will have read three times. The adult hearing them read will be working on decoding, prosidy and comprehension and will write a comment in your child's Reading Record. You are then able to hear your child read this book as many times as you like before writing your comment in the Reading Record.

To summarise;

Monday - A new book begins as reading sessions take place in school. The adult working with your child will be teaching and encouraging decoding

Tuesday - The book will be read again. This time the adult will be teaching and encouraging prosidy (expression)

Thursday - The book will be read again. This time the adult will be checking for understanding (comprehension) 

The book will be allocated to you

The adult who has worked with your child all week will write comments in your child's Reading Record

You can hear your child read the book as many times as you like.

You can write comments in your child's Reading Record.

Friday -  The children can choose a book from the classroom or the library. This is their choice and they can read it to you, with you or listen to you read it to them. This is separate from Little Wandle. Your child is not expected to be able to read this book. It is there for you to share with them.

Milk

Milk is available on a daily basis. the children have milk at around 10.30 am while they eat their fruit and watch their special programme 'Come Outside.' If you want your child to have milk please ask at the school office. Many children ask me why they don't have milk so I thought I would remind you and whatever you decide you could have a conversation with your child to avoid future confusion.

This Week

This week we have been watching and trying dances from across the globe as the children come into school. They watched Spanish and Russian dances and many joined in!

We read the story 'Each Peach Pear Plum' and worked on rhyme. We sang nursery rhymes and the children recognised the rhyming couplets. We talked about the sequences of a story and the children wrote the story, using a beginning, middle and ending.

We have continued our work on position for maths and the children are now recognising ordinal numbers and describing the position of things. 

We had a great art lesson as we created bonfire pictures using powder paints, tissue paper and glitter! 

The daily phonics sessions are progressing well.

Next Week

English 

We will be working from the story 'Where's My Teddy' by Jez Alborough. The children will be relating to this text and writing their own story about losing a toy.

I will be teaching them how to incorporate the feelings of the character into sentences.

The children will create 'wanted' posters for the lost teddy, using descriptive language.

Maths

We will be focussing on numbers to ten, conservation of number, subitising familiar patterns and numbers to ten.

Science

The children will start to explore characteristics of animals. They will sort animals accordingly.

Art

We will be looking at the work of Lowry. Initially the children will be describing his style, the colours he used and how the art makes us feel.

Week ending 16th September 2022

 Hello Year One,

We have had a busy week as the children have been visiting other classrooms for friendship groups and to vote for their house team captain.

The children are beginning to have handwriting lessons. They have been forming the letters l, i and t in glitter and then writing it. If you have any sand or glitter at home this is an ideal way to help them learn letter formation. 

The reading days will change from next week. The new days will be Mondays, (but not next week as it is a bank holiday, so it will be Tuesday) Thursdays and Fridays. The books will be allocated on Fridays from now on.

As the weather was better this week we were able to play outside.

I will be offering you the phoneme terminology sheets today as promised. The children are learning this new vocabulary quickly!

We hunted for sticks again this week and the children made some fabulous creations of 'Not Sticks!'

Week ending 9th September 2022

 Welcome All,

The new 'Year One' have settled so well! They are picking up routines quickly. The children have had great fun and were keen to bring their 'Not A Sticks' home to share with you. 

This week we spent a fair amount of time talking about their feelings around school and the changes that they are becoming familiar with. I also introduces our topics for this half term, please see below;

Science - Animals (Including humans) and Autumn

NEXT WEEK

English

We will be revising the phonemes we have learned and adding ow, ur and oi.

Next weeks tricky words will be I, no, she, he and go.

The children will be listening to the rhyming story Each, Peach, Pear, Plum.

We will be listening to and singing songs with rhyming couplets. The children will work towards sequencing the story at the end of the week.

Maths

The children will be learning about position. They will hear and use positional language. They will describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three quarter turns. They will order first, second third etc. They will use the language of direction and motion, including left and right, top, middle and bottom, on top of, in front of, above, behind, between, around, near, close, far, up and down, forwards and backwards, inside and outside.

 There is a huge emphasis here on vocabulary, therefore if you can use positional language at home this will be a great support for next week's learning.

History

We will be looking at old and new toys and learning the vocabulary needed to describe them.

The children will sort toys into old and new categories.

Science

Animals will be our focus next week, as we sort them into the categories listed below:

Our art lesson will focus on portrait drawing and the children will draw self-portraits.

Last day of term!

 Hello Year One,

I just wanted to say what a wonderful class of children you have been. You have worked so hard and been so helpful, kind and caring. I will miss you, but you will only be next door and we will be doing many activities together when you are in Year Two.

Thank you all so much for the very generous gifts and kind words in the cards you gave me. You know my favourite shop!!

Week ending 8th July 2022

 Hello Year One,

What a busy week we have had! The Apprentice was a huge success this afternoon and the children loved visiting the stalls and spending their money!

We have been learning how to tell the time in our maths lessons this week. This is an easy one to practise at home.

For English we have been writing poems that have rhyming couplets and listening to different styles of poetry. The final activity was to write a poem about Summer and I will share this one with you.

For our geography lesson we travelled to The USA this week and learned about the climate and features of some of the states. 

The children learned and labelled all the body parts in our science lesson this week. 

NEXT WEEK

English

As it will be our last full week next week the children will be writing about their experiences in Year One and their hopes and wishes for Year Two. 

They will be creating a 'friendship hand' whereby they write different qualities about each other on hand drawings. This is a lovely ending activity for children as they recognise the qualities they have been known for during the school year by their peers.

Maths

Next week we will continue to learn how to tell the time.  This will be followed by benchmarking and solving worded maths problems.

Geography

We will be travelling to Brazil next week and will be focusing on The Amazon Rainforest.

Science

The children will be learning about the five senses.

PSHE

Our PHSE lesson will be about identifying differences between male and female animals. They will be identifying the parts of the body that make boys and girls different. They will be learning the correct names for these parts of the body. 

Transition

Next Thursday the children will be spending time in their new Year Two class. This helps them get to know their new teacher and become accustomed to the classroom environment.

In the evening there will be two sessions of 'meet the teacher' at 4.30 and 5.30 for you to meet the new class teacher and be updated on what to expect for the coming year.

Week ending 1st July 2022

 Hello Year One,

The children enjoyed role play this week! For English we are exploring poetry and we listened to the poem 'The Owl and the Pussy Cat.' This was a popular choice and I was surprised by how quickly they were able to recite the poem and use role play to enhance their understanding and develop their creativity.

We have been working on multiplication in our maths lessons and travelled to Kenya for our geography lesson. The children can name the continents now and are becoming aware of some of the countries within the continents. 

For science we continued to research animals and their habitats. The children are becoming familiar with some of the animal classifications now.

NEXT WEEK

English

We will be beginning a poetry project and the children will be reciting poems, using rhyming couplets and finally creating their own poems.

Maths

The children will be learning to tell the time on the hour, half hour and quarter hour.

Geography

We will be travelling to North America next week and will explore the characteristics and features of the USA.

Science

Our topic leads us to study humans as animals and we will be exploring our senses.

The Apprentice

On Friday afternoon the children in Year Six will be raising money for Cancer Research. There will be stalls available to buy products from such as small toys, a hair dressing salon and a group selling smoothies and fruit kebabs. The children will be able to go to the different stalls. We are recommending spending money of between £3 and £5.
