Week ending 11th June 2021

 Hello Year One,

I hope you all had a great half term holiday. 

The children came back full of enthusiasm and have worked hard on all their tasks and activities.

This week we began to look at fractions of shapes for maths. We began our 'Around The World' topic, which means we learn about one country in every continent. The children have been looking at world maps. It would be great if you could continue this at home and ask them to locate the seven continents.

We began a new book for English, called 'Not A Stick.' This week the children had to predict what the story may be about, by looking at the front cover.

We are revising our Phase Five phonics and working on handwriting and letter formation three times a week. I have started 'group reading' so that the children have a shared reading experience and they read at least three or four times a week in school. They are great when practising spellings at school but still need to work on them at home each week, at least three times.

NEXT WEEK

Maths

We will continue to work on fractions of shapes and move on to fractions in the context of capacity and length.

English

We will practise handwriting and spellings three times next week and phonics on a daily basis. We will hear readers in groups three times and at least once individually. The children will write a recount of our story, carry out a comprehension task for our science project and complete a grapheme/phoneme recognition activity.

Geography

We will be going to China next week and our focus will be on locating Asia on a world map, finding China within Asia and looking at 'Chinese New Year.' The children will make dragon puppets.

Science

Our focus will be on Summer and we will be walking round the school grounds using our sense to 'feel' Summer. The children will write about the season change.

Art

We are starting a project on the work of Claude Monet. I will introduce the children to his work and we will discuss his style, the colours he uses and any patterns and textures that can be found.

Week ending 28th May 2021

 Hello Year One,

What a wonderful week we have had! The sun has been shining and we were able to release the butterflies. One flew up to the treetops and the children were so happy to see it fly to freedom!

We have completed our maths project on 'Time' and it would be great to continue this at home. The children can now read o'clock and half past the hour so you can ask them to check the time at home.

Today we finished our history topic 'Famous Queens.' The children really enjoyed learning about the queens of the past and our present queen. They particularly enjoyed watching the three jubilee celebrations.

           The children have learned so much about growth and plants. They can now label the parts of a                 tree and a plant. They can describe the life cycle of a caterpillar and explain what conditions                   plants need to be healthy and grow.

            The children wrote about their feelings on returning to school after lockdown and were able to                explain what made them feel safe, comfortable, happy and therefore able to settle and enjoy                    school life again. They wrote about their favourite activities and special moments.

Week ending 21st May 2021

 Hello Year One,

What an exciting week! The butterflies emerged and there are four! We will be setting them free this week. It has been wonderful for the children to see the whole process first hand. Thank you Poppy for giving us this experience!

We have been exploring 'time' in our maths lessons and the children learned about direction. This week we will be telling the time as in o'clock and half past the hour. 

We completed our English from the story 'Anancy and Mr Dry Bone.' This week we will be writing about the last few weeks at school, what we have enjoyed and special moments. We will also be concentrating on phonics and handwriting.

We went for a walk around the school grounds and identified several Summer flowers. We looked at trees and were able to draw and label the different parts of a tree. This week we will be doing the same with plants. 

The children watched videos of the Queen's three jubilees and imagined they were at The Diamond Jubilee. they wrote cards describing the scenes. This week we will be sorting cards into the three periods of time as we complete our work on Famous Queens.

The children created beautiful butterflies for their art lesson and enjoyed using the bright colours and glitter to decorate them.

Spellings will be coming home today.

Week ending 7th May 2021

 Hello Year One,

We have had a busy week. We completed our Jack and the Beanstalk topic as the children wrote their final copies of their magic bean stories. Next week's English lessons will be based around the story Anancy and Mr Dry-Bone, a West African traditional tale.

We have been learning about 'twice as long' and 'twice as many' in maths lessons and next week the children will begin division in the sense of sharing amongst groups.

Each week the children complete their bean diaries as they observe the growth of their beans. Next week we will be focusing on the caterpillars as they form their chrysalis' and finally butterflies emerge which we will set free. 

Next week we will be learning another faith story. The children thoroughly enjoyed Jonah and the Whale and can recount the story verbally. 

The history topic is engaging the children as we made Tudor masks and re-enacted a Tudor banquet.

 Next week we will be exploring the Victorian period and learning about the huge changes that took place at that time.

Week ending 30th April 2021

 Hello Year One,

We have had a creative week. Through our history project we have gone back in time to 'The Tudor Period.'

We have been making masks for a Tudor feast and learning a Tudor dance. The children found this very funny! 

Jack and the Beanstalk has continued to provide a wealth of wonderful written work and the children have now created their own stories about 'magic beans.' They began by planning the sequence of their stories, next they added adjectives to make them colourful and imaginative. Finally they concentrated on punctuation as they put the stories together. 

Next week we will begin a new book for our English lessons. We will begin to explore 'Anancy and Mr Dry-Bone.' This is a traditional tale from West Africa and it will prompt some colourful art work too!

For maths we will begin to look at scaling and counting in twos to 24. 

Our science lessons will focus on trees as we continue to look at growth. The children will also continue to monitor their bean growth, which is proving very exciting!

We will continue to learn about past and present queens of England, focussing on Elizabeth 11.

We will be printing using our hands and fruit and vegetables to create patterns in our art lesson.

Week ending 23rd April

 Hello Year One,

We have had a wonderful week as the weather has been glorious! The children have been outside on tree hunts, working on observational paintings of Spring/Summer flowers and having great fun with water play.

Let's hope the weather stays warm, as the children love outdoor activities, as you can see!

Next week the children will be writing their own version of 'a magic bean' story. We will be concentrating on digraphs au and ou and revising split vowel digraphs.

We will be continuing our work on multiplication in maths lessons and revising our number bonds during maths frequency sessions.

The children planted beans this week and they will be keeping a diary of their growth. We were lucky to receive a gift from Poppy this week. We now have caterpillars which we can observe as they transform into butterflies. We will also be learning the names for the different parts of a tree.

Our history lesson will be great fun as the children will be creating Tudor masks for a role playing session of a Tudor feast!

For RE we will begin our topic 'faith stories' as we look at stories from different religions and how they instil faith into their followers through these wonderful tales.

Week ending 16th April 2021

 Hello Year One,

We have had a very busy week! 

The children have started to learn about 'traditional tales' and are currently enjoying Jack and the Beanstalk. We began by reading the story and using role play to become more familiar with the characters and the sequence of the story. Yesterday they wrote the story in sequence. Next week the children will be showing understanding of the story through a comprehension activity. We will also be discussing and writing about the moral factors of the story and the children will be able to vote for who they feel did the 'right' thing, Jack or the giant! 

For maths we have been looking at equal and unequal groups. You could continue this learning at home when cooking or shopping. The children are making the link between equal, unequal and odd, even numbers. Next week we will continue with this and move on to multiplication and division.

We have begun a history project on 'Famous Queens,' which the children are finding very interesting. We are focussing on Elizabeth 1, Queen Victoria and Elizabeth 11. Next week we will be exploring Tudor life as we learn more about Queen Elizabeth 1. This will be followed by mask making and working in groups of three to role play a Tudor feast!

Our Science topic is 'growth' and the children have planted beans this week. The children have written the steps they took to plant the beans and next week will focus on what plants need in order to grow. We will also be having a wild plant hunt!

We are talking about relationships for PSHE and our main focus is our friendships at school.

Next week we will be using watercolour paints to create pictures about the growth we see in the school grounds.

Spellings

The children will bring their spellings home today (Friday). They should practice them at least three times before next Friday. They will also be working on learning them at school.

Reading

The children are reading in groups on a daily basis at school. They also read to an adult at least once a week. They should be reading every day at home. Books can be changed daily and they can take up to two books home at the weekend.

PE

Thank you for ensuring the children have their PE kits in school every day.
