 Hello everyone,

It’s been another busy – and very chilly – week in Year 1!

In English, the children began their new unit of work based on the book ‘I Want My Hat Back’ by Jon Klassen. They explored a collection of different hats placed on the tables and asked questions about them. We then started reading the story and discovered that Bear has lost his hat! The children wrote their own questions about the missing hat, remembering to use a question mark at the end. They also wrote sentences about Bear and showed great enthusiasm for the story. The ending was very surprising and they absolutely loved it!

In Phonics, the children learnt the split digraphs a–e, o–e, i–e and u–e. They also practised the tricky words could, would, should and our.

In Maths, the children have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. They named, described and sorted a range of shapes, and enjoyed exploring and making repeating patterns.

In Science, the children began exploring a variety of materials. They drew and labelled objects made from wood, plastic, glass, fabric and metal, using fantastic scientific vocabulary.

In Geography, the children worked in pairs to create messy maps of the classroom. They used different objects to represent furniture and features, thinking carefully about the layout and shape of the room. They found this activity great fun!

In D&T, the children carried out a survey to discover everyone’s favourite fruit. They then represented their results in a pictogram, showing excellent data-handling skills.

Well done, Year 1, for another fantastic week of learning!

Next week

English – The children will continue working on ‘I Want My Hat Back’. They will use speech bubbles to create a conversation between Bear and Rabbit. They will also explore the prefix ‘un’ to change the meaning of words, and write a letter to Rabbit.

Maths – The children will be consolidating their number bonds to 5 and 10.

PSHE – The focus will be on identifying similarities between people in the class.

D&T – The children will examine, taste and describe a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Geography – They will carry out fieldwork by exploring what they can see around the school grounds.

RE – The children will continue learning about the religion of Islam.

Spellings for next Friday’s test are:

Group 1: game, made, same, take, cone, home, note, stone

Tricky words: of, said

Group 2: boat, coat, goat, float

I can see the children have been working extremely hard at home to learn their spellings. Thank you for your continued support.
