Hello everyone,

It’s been another fantastic week in Year 1!

In English, we’ve been exploring the very amusing story Alan’s Big Scary Teeth by Jarvis. The children enjoyed sequencing the story and describing the character of Alan. We have also been working hard on writing sentences correctly. The children tried their best to include a capital letter, finger spaces, and a full stop at the end of each sentence. We will continue to focus on this next week.

In Maths, the children practiced counting backwards within 10. To make this fun, they made rockets and counted backwards as the rockets “launched.” They also used practical objects such as counters and sorting bears to explore concepts like fewer, more, and the same.

In Art, the children really enjoyed using pencils and crayons to create a variety of lines, exploring different textures and styles.

In History, the children were very excited to share stories about the toys their parents, carers, and grandparents used to play with. We looked at toys from the past and were surprised to find that some of those toys are still enjoyed today!

In RE, the children learned about Harvest time. They discovered what harvest means and named and drew things in their lives they are thankful for. They are very excited to share their harvest songs with you all next week.

Next week

English

The children will be exploring the story The Scarecrow’s Wedding by Julia Donaldson. They will be using adjectives to describe one of the main characters, writing a shopping list for the scarecrows’ wedding preparations, creating a 'Wanted' poster for the mischievous character Reginald Rake and writing a postcard, based on a picture from the story, describing what they can see and do

Maths

The children will be comparing numbers, ordering objects and numbers and be introduced to number lines.

Science

The children will begin learning about seasonal changes, with a special focus on Autumn. To help bring our learning to life, we are creating an Autumn discovery table in the classroom. If you’re out and about this weekend, please keep your eyes peeled for any Autumn treasures your child could bring in, such as:

·       Conkers

·       Conker shells

·       Acorns

·       Pinecones

·       Leaves in a variety of Autumn colours

Art

The children will create musical lines, using crayons, pencils, oil pastels and chalks.

RE

We will find out about Harvest traditions

History

We will explore how toys have changed over time.

Tricky Words The tricky words we reviewed this week were sent home today. Thank you for practicing last week’s words at home — the children were amazing at recognising them during phonics lessons!

Handwriting I’ve sent home some Little Wandle letter formation sheets for the children to practice at home. As we continue to work on these letters in class, I’ll keep sending home additional practice sheets to support their handwriting development. Thank you so much for your continued support.

Milk

If you would like your child to receive milk at snack time, you can place an order easily using the QR code displayed at the school office.

We hope you all have a restful and relaxing weekend.
