Welcome to Year One

 Hello Year One,

I am looking forward to showing you all the treasures and exciting activities in the Year One classroom! There is even a new outside play area which I know you will enjoy.

When you start in Year One you will need a full PE kit as we begin getting changed for PE lessons. This consists of a track suit or jogging bottoms and warm top and trainers. This outfit is for outdoor lessons. You will also need plimsolls, a t-shirt and shorts for PE lessons indoors. The whole kit needs to be in a named bag that will hang easily on a peg. It would be great if you could avoid sending large bags in to school as we do not have much space in our cloakroom.

The only other bag you will need is your reading bag. This needs to be the standard reading folder bag for books and a reading record. It would really help if you could just stick to these two bags due to space constrictions.

We create lots of models in Year One and therefore need resources such as egg boxes, toilet roll holders, kitchen roll holders or anything else you would usually recycle. This would be a great help as they get used very quickly!

Our history topic for the first half term is 'Toys.' I have lots of pictures of toys from the past, but we need more toys to put in our museum. Please could you ask grandparents, friends etc to lend us any toys they still have from their past childhoods. This topic is carried out every Autumn and we always create a toy museum with toys borrowed from families. We take extremely good care of them and they will be returned to you at the end of the first half term.

We have several play and learning areas in the class room, including a farm area, sea and pirate adventure land, creative section, writing corner, investigation table, toy museum and maths area. The children will also have access to the new outdoor area which includes a mud kitchen, construction toys, reading area and play shed.

We will work as a whole class for phonics sessions, in groups and individually for reading, groups for maths and English and the children will access the other subjects through the learning areas and activities that have been provided for this purpose.

If you have any concerns, queries or questions for me please do not hesitate to come and see me and we can either discuss at the time or arrange an appointment for a future date and time.

It was really beneficial to myself and the children that we had over a week together in the Summer Term. I feel that I know them fairly well already and I hope they will be looking forward to joining us.

Looking forward to seeing you all next week.

Many thanks

Ms Davis
