 Hello everyone,

It was lovely to see so many of you this morning at the Harvest Festival coffee morning. The children have absolutely loved learning their songs and I’m sure you’ll agree they sang beautifully!

English

This week in English, we have been enjoying our work based on The Scarecrow’s Wedding by Julia Donaldson. The children worked hard to write sentences describing the main characters. They also created postcards to describe the sights from the story and made a shopping list to help Harry O’Hay prepare for the big day!

Maths

In Maths, we have been exploring the concepts of greater than, less than, and equal to. The children used practical resources to compare and order numbers and were also introduced to number lines. They’ve shown great focus and enthusiasm in developing these key skills.

Science

Our Science topic this week has been all about Autumn. The children used the wonderful seasonal objects they collected to draw and name things we see at this time of year. They were full of ideas and very keen to share their thoughts on the signs of Autumn.

As part of our creative work, we made painted handprints in beautiful Autumn colours for our Science display, and also created pumpkins using tissue paper and PVA glue – they look fantastic!

RE

In RE, we’ve been learning about Harvest traditions. We’ve had some thoughtful discussions about where our food comes from and why Harvest is an important time for giving thanks.

Looking ahead to Thursday, we’re very excited to be visiting Christ Church for a special Harvest-themed experience. The children will explore Harvest through activities focused on the sea, the earth, the grain, and the flock. Previous Year 1 classes have loved this event, and we’re sure this year’s children will have a fantastic time too.

Next Week in Year 1

English

The children will be exploring the beautiful book Coming to England by Floella Benjamin. The children will sequence the story to understand the order of events. They will also draw a scene from the book and add a simple caption to describe it. They will think about journeys they have been on and draw and write about one of their own journeys. After discussing Floella’s story, the children will write some sentences about themselves and their families. Finally, they will make a list of things they would need to pack if they were going on a trip.

Maths

Next week, the children will begin a new topic on addition and subtraction within 10. They will develop their skills in solving simple problems using these operations.

Science

We will continue our exploration of the season of Autumn. The children will enjoy a nature walk around the school grounds to observe signs of Autumn in the environment. They will also sketch a tree in the playground, which we will revisit and sketch again during Winter, Spring, and Summer to observe how it changes throughout the year.

History

The children will investigate toys by examining their different characteristics, helping them understand how toys have changed over time.

PSHE

In PSHE, the children will reflect on their personal achievements by drawing and writing about something they are proud of.
